Fitzhenry showed his puck out ability in the game against KK in 04 where a number of senior players reportedly took it on themselves to come up with the game plan. Beyond that his career was spent following instructions to land high puckouts down on our small half forwards before the ball inevitably came straight back at him.
It was a golden era for keepers that will never be equalled for many reasons. Firstly hurling was still 15 on 15 and sweepers hasnât come into play bar Daly trying it with Clare. Tv coverage had just begun for all provincial games so the profile of players was rising. Keepers particularly gained from this most as they were on the camera more often than any other player taking puckoutsâŚThey were the last to wear helmets so they were also more recognisable.
The 2 Firzâs and Nashâs (more recently) ability to take or not take penalties or 21 yard frees also added to it
They were also the tail end of the era before massive bosses and light sliothars where it was still possible to save a well struck shot.
Noel Skehan was a real trailblazer.
Was Skehan the first goalie to utilise the big bas?
Noel Skehan is only an oul cunt
Davy Fitz was underrated if anything as a goalkeeper
I agree. Great shot stopper, great presence. Cummins was good but fell off a cliff near the end. Both well ahead of the rest.
When did this happen?
Jim Troy was the GOAT
4-24 to 1-15
He made a mistake for one goal, he didnât fall off a cliff
He swiped at one goal like you wouldnât see in a junior game.
Davy was a great goalie, Iâd rate him a lot higher than Fitzhenry Just because of the amount of huge games he played and excelled in, Cummins had it all though, he was the best, Ogie was a mediocre shot stopper but the rest of his game was flawless.
He made one mistake, he didnât fall off a cliff. He also saved a certain goal in the first half
He jumped the shark. Happy now.
Thatâs a pretty big issue to have with Cusack. He shouldnât be mentioned in the same breath as the other three.
When teams pushed up and stopped his short puck outs Cusack was clueless. A very overrated GK in reality.
A goalie who was a mediocre shot stopper being talked of as one of the greats. Fuck sake, his first job is to fucking stop the ball.
