Leaving Cert Results

More that they wont take this sort equality lying down.

Statistically, the private school pupils are likely entirely correct but as you say politically they won’t get much traction. The dept spotted that trap from the UK.

It prob depends on the CAO offers and how many end up disappointed - who cares what points you got if you get a course you want. You’d imagine there’ll be a nice amount of cases being taken to the court in any event though.

They should have told the colleges to get rid of 90% of the “courses” for 1st year and just sorted people in general Arts, Science etc. Work hard in first year college and you can get in. Half the first year modules are generic anyway and sat across courses.

Can’t see On what basis private schools could run a case?

Shane just facilitated an elite school teacher on radio Malta there. He says it’s the middle of the road kids in private schools who are suffering here. They’ve been marked down whereas the highlight figures for the star pupils were kept intact.
I’d imagine Sir Kneel Richmond will have a busy office this Friday

Not at all - it takes the average student nearly two years to adjust from rote learning to independent thought - so most students are just starting to grasp college and they’re out the door. If anything they should make 1st year about generic study tips/writing/developing arguments etc. etc - let students do generic cultural/social/political courses in first year to develop the tools needed — let the serious shit begin then.

College really isn’t that difficult.

When you’ve been indoctrinated into not thinking for yourself - what do you expect from students? It might not be that hard but it’s completely alien to Irish kids who are just spoon fed in secondary school -

Nah pal, you overstate how difficult college is.

It’s as easy to get a B in an exam in college as it is in the LC.

You can make an argument for A grades/Firsts, but most people aren’t fishing in that pool.

I’ve no idea what legal basis they could do it, but if a school (say non-private high achieving like Colaiste Iosgain) typically got an above average % of H1/H2 over a period of years and now they didn’t, despite the teacher submitting at that level, I’m sure the argument would be the system was designed/implemented incorrectly. I’d imagine there’s probably some guff that the Dept came out with saying “no pupil would be disadvantaged by the use of this system over written exams” and in that grey area the lawyers will make some coin

There’s too much hand holding of students nowdays, including 3rd level. It’s why they’re fucked when they go into the workplace and they’re expected to produce. Half of them shouldn’t be in 3rd level to begin with.

Depends on the course - exam only where you can just rote learn again, fair enough - you’re just doing what you’ve always done. There’s plenty of course that are continuous assessment and are assessed through papers/dissertations and require some level of thought. Many, if not most, kids struggle here and just regurgitate notes from class.

Some lads want to spend half their lives in college rather than go into the workplace.

Agreed - begins in secondary school tho. The system as we know it, which was designed for the civil service really, needs a major overhaul.

Only the 8 H1s this year.

CA makes things far easier for many.

If someone can rote learn for an exam, they can game themselves to a B in an undergraduate essay or dissertation.

The average result on the advance history Leaving Cert project is an A. Teachers help but it is just another form of gaming.

All assessments have to have some degree of methodology behind them and they are figured out. I can agree that there would be people in the LC who game their way to A1s, but college is also supposed to be of a higher standard so the threshold for a First will be higher.

The reality for most is that a II.I is not that hard to achieve and that is where most people fish.

I disagree - one of the big reasons people get their Bs and Cs is because they are being pushed along — Many students shouldnt be in 3rd level education and many more should barely be passing but college is a business, not a place of education so large swathes are pushed along and given degress. Do we blame management or academics for going along with it? but degrees aren’t worth a wank anymore and this largely why.

College was a doddle compared to the Leaving. The FAE was Senior hurling though.

These kids have been completely fucked to win a PR battle for the government. It’s very sad.
