My own views are that education at all levels should be completely free and accessible to all who want to go. We have systemic inequalities in society and education is another tier in which that exists. Free third level should be a right, in my opinion.
In saying that, I think @Fagan_ODowd makes valid points (as he always does). While private education certainly tends to favour the already privileged, itâs not always the case. I know a chap whose father drove a bin lorry and they sent him to private school for six years. The young lad was more into science fiction than football and felt this would be the place for him. He went to a tough enough primary school and they didnât want him doing six more years of that. I donât know how they afforded it but they did. Other families have had kids bullied etc. and taken them out and put them in a private school. I suppose these parents are trying to give their kids opportunities that they never had.
I hear a load of kids got downgraded in Laurel Hill. Some of them had only put their top 1 or 2 preferences onto the CAO so they are up shit creek now.
How did I get dragged into this? GrrrrrrrrâŚ
A brief look indicates that Ăineâs teachers scored her with 6 H1âs and a H2. Aside from Ăineâs ability (not in doubt) theyâd hardly do anything else as it wouldnât be in their own interests. Hawkeye or whatever other organisation deals with this adjusted the score downward.
All this is of course predicated on Ăine having a stormer during the exams and seamlessly answering all questions. Are we sure this would happen, no weâre not.
Thereâs always the possibility that Ăine might do a Mayo on it and fill her togs.
Itâs tough on the girl but shit, as they say, happens. No givens, merely death and taxes.
Itâs best foot forward for any test case. There is no such thing as a class action in Ireland. Theyâd hope to win this one and the house of cards will topple over.
The girl is entitled to bring the case. Best of luck to her. Sounds like she was hard done by. The Department will find it hard to defend this in court I imagine
