Leaving Cert Results

Stackoverflow is the best work colleague I ever had

As a former software tester it’s patently obvious nobody did a bare bones cursory check with even one made up student. If so it’d be obvious that the model was broken. One part unsurprising, one part inexcusable.

What’s the Junior Cert got to do with it?

How long would it take to write 50,000 lines of code @EstebanSexface? Let’s say basic enough code

One guy?

Lets say one guy and we can work back

A month I reckon.

So ten lads about three days? With checks and everything you’d be up and running in a week or so. Nice work if you can get it. Especially if it doesn’t actually have to work

Sure my whole business is going fixing up shit like this after the cowboys have been in. Not exactly this, but not a million miles away

You essentially already have your output - the predicted grade. And you have your normal distribution Bell curve as a control. So you calibrate your model with a few independent variables, come out with something close to the predicted grade but sufficiently opaque to withstand a legal challenge

They’d have trained their model on students that had already received grades in the last few years with the same classification variables.

How long since the leaving cert cycle changed significantly? 5-10 years. Say you take a 5 year training set. And then a 1 year test set. Train over the set, run on the test set. They must have had a good r squared in testing to run it against “live” data. Even then they should have run it multiple times against live data to see if there were any major deviations.

A rushed job.

Yes my cynical interpretation of reverse engineering to match the predicted grades is probably inaccurate as the model has sufficient independence to award relatively low scores in German to German nationals for example

I doubt they’d have nationality as a classification. In that case all Irish would overachieve as Gaeilge

An outlier

Polymetrica are Canadian.
They’ve asked a U.S not for profit organisation to come in and fix up the mess.

Theres an amount of Irish lads who’d have sit the leaving cert that could do this for them.

You have to outsource this for political reasons. Imagine Fiachra from Foxrock being marked down by a model developed by a fourth cousin of Alan Kelly

Only reading all this now.

Instead you’ve 6,5k marked down because some Canadian developer hadn’t a fucking breeze what CSPE, the junior cert or the leaving cert is.

Ashutosh, take irish, english, maths and the 2 best grades

Yes, yes.

So that’s the 2 best grades Ashutosh, right.

Yes yes. 2 grades. No issues

2 best grades

Yes. Yes. No worries

Ashutosh to his team. Take Irish, English, Math and the 2 worst grades.

  Ah shtap, it’s too real.

Norma must be dreading what else is yet to be found in this 50,000 lines of code.
