Luckily, in the midst of a long line of limited managers, Jack OâShea kept a young Ciaran McDonald (0-02) on the subs bench until the ship had sailed. Compounding this error he threw in John Casey who performed up to his usual standard, all solo running to the wings and pointing. One useless shaper, collar and all.
As the saying goes " if it were the Mayo forwards that day on the grassy knoll Kennedy would be still alive ".
This is a good thing.
Maughan turned that around fairly drastically. He took them to an All Ireland two years later, which they should have won.
Thereâs a limited value to it once you remove Ciaran Kilkenny from the frame.
Watching fuckwits at it, misplacing the side of the boot miracle through ball and then pointing at the anticipated recipient in frustration though can draw the ire of the muldoon supporters down on top of you in short order.
That 94 Mayo team probably werenât as bad as they looked that day. The mention of Maughan rekindles the cuddly memory of the thundering box Gerry Flanagan flattened him with around that time. He fairly put Maughan on his arse and trotted along to the line with his customary cheeky grin⌠The red card was forgotten about.
That was brilliant.
The amount of matches I was at back at that time when youâd hear exclamations from the opposing fans of âNUMBER 7 REF!! NUMBER 7â
It was Flanagan and we knew he had done something but we would still respond with âshut up to fuck up will ya!!â
Not a word of a lie there. A 1st cousin of mine is married to his sister and outside of town or matches Iâd run in to him at weddings, wakes and funerals. Heâs aged a bit like us all but retains the impish qualities that endeared him to rural supporters. A good man to embellish a half-truth if you know what I mean. A good sort.
âImpishâ
Great word which sums him up.
If he didnât take them to the beach and run the absolute shit out of them between final and replay they might have got over line in '96âŚ
Still it was some turnaround from 94 where they were utterly horrific. Beat Kerry in the semi as well.
Got to the final again in 1997 too although Maurice Fitz proved too much on that occasion.
Awful pity they didnât have macdonald in 96 finals . He would have at least taken a shot ⌠The amount of buck passing they did near the end was terribleâŚ
Why wasnât he there do you know?
I actually havenât thought about that before.
I presume he wasnt there⌠Think he was in Australia around that time
That would make sense.
I watched this game for the first time last weekend. I had never seen the full game as i was under the scoreboard watching on the day.We should have won by at least 10 pts. Some of our forwards shooting was woeful Conlon being the main culprit (tbf he won some amount of ball)Mcglynns shooting was very poor. Our midfielders and backs cleaned up all day.It was some day out tbf.Im actually on TV after the match on the pitch slapping one of the players on the back with my big straw hat on.
Ryan OâRourke benefiting hugely from the break in training/match time. Hamstring issues for the past months finally getting the care they need.
This is according to his oulâ man who rang on Sunday. We had a great chat before I asked him did he require help with something or why was he ringing.
Lookit he says, the club are committed to looking after the elderly. Nobody else bar myself would venture ringing you, they reckon youâre a grumpy fucker. Dâya want anything or can I mark you down as sound.
He hung up halfway through a tirade of abuse. Theyâre sound skins.
We should have a full hand to pick from if and when we get goin again.Id love to see us just goin into a straight KO open draw All Ireland. The break in training will level the playing field a bit.Itâd be a bit like the pre season competitionâs.
Philly McGuinness. 10 anniversary.
