Statement from Celtic Football Club

By: Newsroom Staff on 04 Jul, 2012 17:57

CELTIC Football Club today confirmed that it opposed re-admission to the Scottish Premier League by Rangers newco.

Today´s decision to refuse access into the SPL was an overwhelming one and demonstrates the depth of feeling amongst everyone involved in Scottish football.

Fundamentally, the Celtic Board has also been very mindful of the need to take what it believes to be the correct course of action in protecting the integrity of the game in Scotland

The matter is now within the jurisdiction of the Scottish Football Association and it will be for the SFA to decide on the future of Rangers newco.

Throughout the whole sequence of events leading up to today’s decision the Celtic Board has been of the singular view that the integrity of the game in Scotland is of paramount importance. Our only other consideration has been to protect the interests and right of the Club and our supporters.

Whilst the financial implications of today’s vote for Celtic and for the Scottish game as a whole will be very significant, we have already stated that Celtic has a business plan and strategy independent of any other club.

Our supporters can rest assured that we will continue to fight to protect Celtic’s best interests within the Scottish game.

In addition, we will be working with our other fellow SPL clubs in the days and weeks ahead to take all possible steps to maximise commercial returns, which remain crucial in these economically-challenging circumstances. We will also play an active role in mapping the future of Scottish football.

The fans are the lifeblood of the game and we know how strongly our supporters, and those of other clubs, felt about this issue.

We are confident that Celtic’s fans, together with the supporters of all the SPL clubs, will now play a major role in rallying behind their clubs to ensure that Scottish football emerges stronger from this episode.

During Celtic’s long and illustrious 125-year history, there have been periods of difficulty. At these times, our supporters have always stood shoulder to shoulder with the Club. We need our supporters to be with us now, more than ever.

We know our own supporters will be acutely aware of the significant challenges that lie ahead. We enter next season as Champions of Scotland and look ahead to retaining our title and to making an impact in a European context. We know how difficult this will be and we call on our supporters to join us in tackling these challenges, to take their place at Celtic Park, to invest in the Club and to continue to give us the kind of support for which they are renowned.

So it was No x 10, Yes x 1 (old Huns) and Abstention x1 (Kilmarnock).

But here’s a weird one. Sevco have agreed a deal in principle to sign that hatchet man Ian Black whose contract with Hearts has expired. Hearts couldn’t afford to offer him a new contract because they’re skint largely because the old huns haven’t paid them for Lee Wallace yet. And now new huns could pick him up on a free at the end of it all. The deal can’t be completed until the new huns know what division, if any, they’ll be in as they can’t currently register players.

Ridiculous that they’re agreeing player deals without a clue if they’ll be playing, nevermind what division they’ll be playing in. He’s a typical signing for the old huns so doesn’t like this new crowd based in Ibrox will be operating much differently. Nor do they seem particularly interested in living within their means.

What sort of idiot is he anyway agreeing to join them?

Bizarre scenes this evening with Regan (head of the SFA) saying there will be “social unrest” and “dire consequences” if there’s no Rangers. He goes on to say that there’s only one acceptable solution which is admitting them to the first division.

This is despite all the polls of fans (including fans of the former huns) overwhelmingly in favour of them joining at third division level - the next most favourable option is extinction. And the SFA continue to argue that this will kill the league that they’re joining.

Heard a lad on off the ball saying that the daily record and the sun were really ramping up the armegeddon style headlines about what would happen if the huns were not allowed into the spl

Sent from my GT-S5369 using TFK App

Yeah they had a concerted media campaign today and they pushed for a vote deferral as well on these catastrophic yet unknown financial grounds but I think the absolutely overwhelming numbers of people who threatened to never go to a game again if their club supported the newco application meant it was doomed.

Couls someone please simplify this fro me

1 Rangers are fucked ??
2 They will not play in the spl next year
3 They might play in division 1

4Why cant they start at the bottom league and work their way up
5Whats happening to the players
6 Is it possible to back Celtic for the SPL in 2013

  1. Yes
  2. Correct
    3, Correct
  3. Because that might take too long apparently. The SFA think that would leave them out of the top flight for a few years and then there’d be less money in the SPL (though there’d be far more money at lower levels which you’d think would be a good thing and the SPL have already excluded them) and it would create a social problem.

The implication of all this is that Rangers need to get back to the top division quickly and the SFA are clear on this now. So are we supposed to believe that they’d be impartially treated? If they need a goal to get promoted and the SFA are adamant that they need to get promoted then are we to believe they won’t be given a helping hand? It’s a ridiculous attitude for the governing body to take.

  1. Most have left. They are left with 6 senior players and some youths.

  2. Yes. 1/50 with Paddy Power.

Well Claerly the SFA are only interested in getting rangers back into the top flight BUT canr be seen to just parashute them in ??

Who takes there place in the spl now Rocko

could a third club now second to celtic emerge in Scotland

Incredible quotes from Stewart Regan, CEO of the SFA tonight:

"“The only solution for the game now is that Rangers come into the Scottish Football League and they come into SFL1.”

Regan on Rangers in Division 3 and loss of money: “If we allowed that to happen, it would simply be a dereliction of duty.”

“From our perspective as the governing body and we cannot allow that to happen.”

He’s basically saying that the money in Scottish football would be greater if the new huns were successful so that must take precedence over fairness and integrity.

It won’t be popular at all if they’re given favouritism. And it’s not just a Celtic thing. They were the biggest problem in Scottish football because they destroyed a reasonably competitive league with their outrageous spending and tax schemes.

It will probably be Dundee who replaces them but not decided yet. They’re next in line from first division but relegated Dunfermline are another option.

If another club like Aberdeen or either of the Edinburgh clubs got a sustained run of success there’s no reason they couldn’t achieve a lasting growth.

Football favours big business over sporting integrity shocker.

Hibs’ season ticket sales are up on last season according to reports. But the scaremongering from the complicit SPL, SFA and sections of the media is relentless.

Who owns Ibrox and other (non player) old co assets?

Looking forward to lowly newco Rangers giantkilling run in the Scottish cup next year, only to be bundled out by Celtic in an uneventful QF

I see Rangers NewCo have been dropped by the organisers of their pre-season tour to Germany

Sky putting pressure on to have them included in First Division I hear.

I don’t think I’ll like this newco crowd.

They will replace Rangers (RIP) as my team to despise in Scottish football

Projected SFL voting as taken from the Huddleboard who got it from some bloke on Kerrydale Street:

redbhoy from kds done the work on this
sevco to Div 1 needs 15 Yes votes
confirmed No’s or abstentions - 14
possible yes votes( nobody has confirmed a Yes yet)- 15

1 more club to say No, and it’s over for Doncaster,Regan and Longmuir

This whole thing is bullshit.

Rangers broke the rules and don’t deserve special treatment.

Rangers being demoted could affect some clubs, but not necessarily negatively. Aberdeen, Dundee United and the Edinburgh duo have to see this as an opportunity. Champs League qualification, trophies etc.

The Media, and Sky in particular, are portraying the attempts to help Rangers as “Saving Scottish Soccer”. I’m sorry but the people over Rangers tried to ruin it.

The demotion and dismantling of Rangers could be the best thing that has ever happened Scottish soccer. It’s no longer a two team league, it’s now up to the others to step up
