Imagine what level of performance that Kilkenny team could have reached under Kinnerk. Kinnerk is a coaching genius. I just could not see Limerick achieving what they have without him, and in turn it would make any comparisons to that Kilkenny team redundant. That kilkenny team contained some of the all time greats of the game. I just dont see Limerick having the same level of individual brillance. Limerick are the ultimate team and that is not meant as a slight on them.
They can all slot into the system. I wonder how many of them would have looked decent with a red jersey on the last day? Definitely 8 it 9 top end players alright
It’s early days for them though, the likes of Finn and Lynch, maybe Gillane could go on to be all time greats if they keep going the way they are
Finn and Lynch for sure but system deffo enhances Gillane’s performance imho. Id put it this way,I take Richie Power over Gillane every day of week and twice on Sunday.
I’m not arguing here but Gillane is more than the system… He’s well able to win his own ball … He had a poor year this year tho
Anyway, I think most Limerick fans would agree that kk are still the GOATs. And will probably remain that way. To be in the conversation is nuts when you think where Limerick were 10 years ago.
When Kiely and or Kinnerk get awarded man of the match, then we can have the conversation
Me too, I hope I’m wrong but I think Gillane has a shelf-life. You’re right about the system and he can struggle when he’s denied space but he can be pure class when he hets the ball in his hand
Fair point about Gillane and the system angle is a stick to beat players with.
Video analysis has a lot to do with Gillane this year as opponents are better equipped to anticipate runs.
Donal O Gradys Betamax must have been broken last week
I’d put casey ahead of Gillane particularly after this year. Two completely different roles but Casey’s ability to read the game is better than Gillanes.
Has the debate changed? I thought we were comparing teams at their best, Limerick can’t compare on a legacy level yet obviously but the current team appears more dominant than any Kilkenny team, obviously if the teams played Limerick would absolutely destroy them but that is due to advances in sports science as much as anything
Up until this year a lot of pundits identified Gillane as the reason Limerick’s system worked so well due to his ball winning ability. We have evolved and don’t rely on him for scores any more, all six of our forwards have scored five or more points from play for us, shut down Gillane or anyone else and they others will pick up the slack, no problem.
It certainly was
I would not agree with that at all. It would be fascinating to see the best coached team vs the team with greater talent. I would not like to call it.
I just don’t think a team from 08 could compete, I’m not giving them access to modern day coaching or science
Attitude is everything with Aaron when he is focused he is an excellent inside forward and can beat you any which way, does have a tendency to be very lazy and requires the odd kick up the hole. He has huge potential if he can improve on his consistency to deliver.
Kilkenny 2021 still doesn’t have access to either modern day coaching or science
Ah they had top class hurlers, phyciality, attitude and workrate and played as on the edge as Limerick if not more. There would be no fear of them. If say they would test the system
Apples and oranges and I know to a certain extent that’s what you want to do. But you can have all the talent in the world and still win nothing if you’re not coached correctly. Case in point being the argument put forward during the past week about Tipp having better hurlers than Limerick.
I’m no expert, I might well be wrong, but I was of the belief that fitness levels have increased significantly in inter county hurling over that time. Strength and conditioning as well, and people are underestimating the hurling ability of Limerick by assuming Kilkenny have a serious advantage on that score,
Just my opinion, we can’t play the match
