Limerick ‘21 v Kilkenny ‘08 - Who are the GOAT?

I was watching Reeling in the years tonight, 02 and DJ got the point from the sideline where he hopped the ball on the stick beforehand, they went mad for it,
There isn’t a player 1-20 for Limerick who wouldn’t do it in their sleep, (maybe WOD)

What was the longest passage of play in the opening half without the ball going dead ? I’d imagine the minute mark wasnt broken too often?

Would there be anyway of comparing the average passages of play to this years finals to previous years?

Hurling is turgid at the minute. Points being fired over from half-back lines, no goal mouth skirmishes, etc. It’s genuinely hard to watch. I think @Fulvio_From_Aughnacloy called it a while back, but football is far more enjoyable than hurling at the minute. Dub v Mayo was more exciting by a long stretch than anything we’ve seen in senior IC hurling this year.

Because the scoopy part of it and finish wasn’t difficult. The more impressive part was the physical strength and persistence to make the easy chance in the first place. But probably the most overrated finish ever. By a player who was underrated in the grand scheme of things.

Was (is?) Carey underrated? I wouldn’t have thought so. He was very highly regarded during his playing career, and still is to this day.

Massive bosses on sticks. Ultra bouncy sliotars which travel 100 yards with sliderule ease. Olympic handball with hurleys.

Puke hurling.

in fairness, even @Little_Lord_Fauntleroy had heard of Sheflington

Unenforced rules aren’t helping either. Steps and handpass for starters.

I thought Hoggy was carrying a goalie’s hurley yesterday. The bas was as big as a tennis racket.

Are we in agreement that there’s an asterisk against this one? There surely has to be.

Obviously he was very highly regarded during his career and indeed was regarded as a superstar during his career, but my impression is he has been curiously forgotten to an extent since then because of the amount of titles Kilkenny won afterwards, and because Shefflin existed. Great as Shefflin was, Carey was a league above him. Mercurial genius plus achievement deserves to be ranked above relentless excellence without that extra touch of mercurial genius. Carey consistently scored goals nobody else was capable of.

I got one there a few weeks ago, first time I’d ever had one. The bas is nearly twice the size of ones I used to use. Everything is easier - touch, control, striking. I’m starting to wonder why I didn’t get a game for Kilkenny back in the day

The throwing is a joke… But think about it for a second if you go strict on it then a ball will never come out of a ruck.

The odd ground stroke wouldn’t go astray either, it’s completely gone out of the game. Do you really think the likes of Lynch would be as brave if he though there was a chance of a fella coming through and putting ball and all out in front of him with a big swing?

That’s a vote for Kilkenny from @Little_Lord_Fauntleroy, I take it?

Limerick have taken the game to unreal heights – Only the Limerick B team could live with them.

Limerick need to win 4 in a row to compare

Lads like David Dempsey, Ronan Lynch and Andrew La Touche Cosgrave would walk on to most other county teams.

It’s been taken out of the game by referees as much as coaches, same with the overhead bat
