Limerick GAA 2022 - Dual Kings (Part 1)

The Quaid Dynasty is pretty incredible when you think about it. 50 years in goals for Limerick with only brief gap in the 2000s

It is yeah. That would be Tim Cahills and the old Post office the buildings in the background.

We need to ensure there is never a Quaid generation gap again.

Copying and pasting from my notes on last nights County Board meeting in Woodlands:

MOTIONS AT CONGRESS:

The new smart sliothar motion was passed, and microchipped balls will be trialled during U20 Championship games starting next month.

The allowance of regrading of club players between championship rounds 1 and 2 was voted to be discontinued. Meaning Senior/Intermediate club players will now not be allowed to play at two different grades in the same year.

The anti-doping motion has been deferred for another year. While the premise was widely supported, the logistics of implementing it in time for this years championships were felt to be too complicated.

Child Protection motion was passed. This would include cases where an underage player could seek a transfer to another club if it’s proven that bullying/harassment is taking place. The transfer would need to be approved by the CCC.

COUNTY NEWS:

Limerick GAA Golf Classic to take place on 24th March. The CB will also hold a special corporate event in April, priced at €1500 a table.

Regarding tickets for Limerick’s championship games, clubs will be allocated a direct link for tickets via a code, to be used on Ticketmaster site.

Work on Mick Neville Park stand due to commence this week. It is planned to have the official opening of the stand at the Senior County Football Final to be held there in October.

Limerick Bord na nÓg reminds us that if two clubs can’t agree on a change of fixture, then the original fixture date will stand. It also wishes to emphasise that in instances of referees receiving abuse, either verbal or physical, that the relevant clubs will be fined.

Croke Park has issued recommendations that no competition/grade should have no more than 16 competing teams. The Junior A County championship currently has 24 teams, so the CB is considering splitting it up into two grades of Junior A Premier/Junior A for 2023.

Regarding the Gaelic Grounds an August event, most likely a concert or show, will be announced shortly.
It was revealed on the night that there are several cost issues associated with the north stand and both terraces. The CB spends circa €15k annually maintaining the north stand alone. Power washing has caused issues with electrics/wiring and some of the fold-up seats are beginning to come away from their metal hinges. It was also revealed that the seats, installed in 2004, were intended for use for indoor setting, hence they are now so discoloured and weather beaten. Steps on both terraces are starting to crack and are being replaced.
It was reiterated that kids are not allowed enter the Gaelic Grounds pitch either at half time or full time of games. There has been too many incidents of children being injured and the CB’s insurance does not cover these injuries.

Team Limerick Cleanup is being launched on 4th April. The event will take place on Good Friday and across the Easter Weekend and all clubs are encouraged to get people involved.

Those seats in the North Stand are a disgrace. It was obvious that the ballast was made out of ferrous metal and was going to rust. Easy money come. Easy money go.

That’s very unfair and should have been announced before clubs submitted their list of 15. I appreciate it’s not as big an issue this year because of the condensed championship but you could still see a player get no game time if they got injured/drunk before senior champ started and can’t win their place back.

Has there though?

The Gaelic Grounds is one massive white elephant. I’ve never liked it. The best thing the CB could do is sell it, and use the fortune they receive to build a spanking new modern stadium near the motorway, one that could hold events and conferences. It would be a a great money spinner.

I can’t believe they continue to pump money into that ugly decrepit cesspit.

In less than 5 years the GG will be the premier stadium in Ireland outside Croke Park.

Watch this space.

Spike noted a few incidents last year, two where kids were split open by hurleys, and another where a lad got a sliothar into the eye.

Say that with a straight face :grin::grin:

I know it sounds daft, but I’m serious.

What’s your sources for this

Elvis is well connected to the big house

Need the kids to wear helmets at half time so. Problem solved

The Covered stand will surely have to be knocked and rebuilt for that to be the case. Is there enough room given how close it is to the road to do that?

The uncovered stand is as good a vantage point as anywhere to watch a match due to the lack of pillars but has its own drawbacks depending on the weather.

The Mackey will be for the bulldozers and wrecking balls alright.

In John Cregan’s own words last night….….”the Mackey Stand is also coming to the end of it’s lifespan, it will need upgrading soon so that’s something we’re keeping in mind too”.

There you have it now.

If they could make it a full bowl you’d have a serious stadium. PUC in fairness would be a grand spot if they ever managed to fill it for a hurling match
