Limerick GAA 2023-2024.... 5 in a row is not here

Half time in Croom.

Granagh m-Ballingarry 1-14 Knockainey 1-8

The Knockfierna men full value for their lead, Luke Flynn doing untold damage with a haul of 1-4 from play. Darragh Casey and Cathal O’Keeffe very prominent around the middle of the park. Sean O’Connor unerring with frees.

Knockainey were poor for most of the half but were given a lifeline when awarded a penalty for a foul on Donal Madden in the 25th minute. Pat Kirby dispatched it into the corner. Pa Reale has shot a couple of nice points to keep them in it.

There’s a moderate breeze here but unless Knockainey use it and show considerable improvement in second half, it’s G/Bs to lose.

In Laois you name 15 early in the year and 2 more later on. Those 17 have to play in the grade regardless of whether they take the field. It’s generally not blackguarded but is open to fuckology

In Limerick being long term injured or away in Australia usually gets you first team status for the 15 submitted.

Very valid point of injuries and requirements of bigger squads. Does need to be looked at

Daylight robbery in Caherconlish.

Na Piarsaigh 2-13 Cappamore 1-15.

Cappamore were largely in control from early on and 5+ ahead for most of the game. Na Piarsaigh scored 2-1 in injury time with the second goal from a long ball from the middle of the field straight into the net in the tenth minute.

Any result from Bruree v Hospital?

They need the “backroom support” team just to keep the 19 subs entertained.

Cappamore must be sick as dogs.

@dodgy_keeper is indisposed tonight.

GRANAGH/BALLINGARRY 1-26
KNOCKAINEY 1-13

Just back from Croom.

There are new favourites for the Nick Grene Sports Maintenance Intermediate Club Championship. A complete performance from start to finish by Granagh/Ballingarry saw them take the spoils against a very lethargic and disappointing Knockainey.

In what was an evenly contested affair for the opening ten minutes, Luke Flynn and Cathal O’Keeffe trading points with Pa Reale and Jason Lonergan, the men in green & black soon gained the upper hand. Luke Flynn found plenty of space to rifle home 1-4 inside the first thirty minutes. The goal came in the dying embers of the half, Flynn doing well to wriggle past two Knockainey defenders before cooly finishing past custodian John Ryan with a batted finish. The G/B #12 may perhaps have taken more than the requisite number of steps, but the finish could only be admired. Only just before it, the All Blacks had been given a lifeline when Donal Madden was pulled back inside the square. Pat Kirby placed his penalty with precision to O’Connors right and it was 0-12 to 1-7. But Flynn’s three pointer and another from Cathal O’Keeffe saw the Knockfierna men lead 1-13 to 1-7 at half time.

G/B hurled with a moderate breeze in the first half hour. But even allowing for that they started to squeeze Knockainey all over the field in the second quarter. O’Keeffe and Quille dominating midfield, Seanie O’Connor was everywhere in his free man role. Darragh Casey tormenting Jack O’Grady with his power and ball winning skills at 11.

The second half was a mere procession. O’Connor continued to be almost unerring from frees, 6 scores from 9 attempts. But it was his availability to find space at puckouts that was most impressive. His namesake finding him with any number of restarts. Together with Flynn,Casey, Russell and midfielders O’Keeffe and Quille, they toyed with Knockainey throughout the second half. Score of the half was a massive effort from G/B keeper from his own 65 out by the sideline, against the breeze. That put the westerners eleven up with ten remaining, and it was over as a contest. Ref Mike Meade awarded Knockainey brief respite when he gave them a second penalty, a very harsh call against G/B defender who seemed to put in a fair block. Where Kirby went for placement in the first half, this time he opted for power. An immensely struck shot was well batted to the side by G/B keeper Denis O’Connor. It summed up the night for Knockainey. Corner forward Pa Reale and full back Nigel Finch offered the best resistance for the All Blacks on a night when their team mates didn’t turn up. For G/B one could easily pick out 8 or 9 stars on the night, but hard to look past Luke Flynn’s 1-7, all of which came from play.

Knockainey were generally outworked, outplayed and out hurled all over the field. The 13 point margin did not flatter G/B, who must surely now be bookies favourites to win this grade out.

Ahane 2-22 Kildimo/Pallaskenry 2-16 in Cappamore
Bitterly disappointing to lose last night. We were unable to execute whatever plan we had. No complaints from me, Ahane were the better side and held the lead for most of the game. That’s not to say that we didn’t have chances (I think both sides had 30 shots on goal, they were just a lot more accurate) but probably not a true reflection of the game as they did always have the lead and were able to sit in at the end and were happy to let us point away, as long as they didn’t concede a goal.

And we couldn’t really have got a much better start. First ball into Kyle, caught it over Dan, ran through on goal, dragged to ground and Shaun Barry buried the penalty. But, from then on, we couldn’t get enough good ball to Kyle. Whereas Ahane were able to feed Tom an awful lot more. I thought Tony McCarthy did as well as anyone could on him, he won a fair few 50/50s but Tom is irrepressible tbh. An unbelievable performance from him, yet again.

Not that it was a one-man show, Dan Minehan did a lot of damage in the first half in particular and Ronan Fox took his goal really well. But everything went through Tom, they made hay with the wind at their back, they were able to land puckouts almost on our '21 and the disappointing thing was they beat us on winning that dirty ball. There were a lot of rucks and the like all over the pitch and they horsed us out of it. And that’s not good. Another flat performance in the first game of the season, like Mungret last year and in 2020, and this one could prove to be costly. We didn’t reach our true levels, a lot of players played within themselves; the difference in the intensity & work rate we brought yesterday versus what we brought against Doon last year was huge. Maybe the prep in the lead-up wasn’t ideal, but can’t be looking for excuses either, we weren’t good enough on the day. And in fairness to Ahane, they brought that work rate and a bit of experience to see the game out. They’ve done this before, last few years, they’ve dug out this win and it’s a big ask of us now.

To be fair, we were a lot better in the second half, Darren O’Connell in particular brought the fight to them, scored 0-2 and set up another 0-6 directly; Jack O’Keeffe was really good and got on a load of ball. Kyle was always a threat and looked the most likely to get a goal but he just didn’t get enough ball and when he came out, we were blunt inside.

Ahane seemed to get their scores a lot easier, we had to work a lot harder to get scores, which is never a good sign. And pretty much everything they hit went over the bar where we were not efficient at all.

Mike Sexton did well as ref to be fair to him, let the game flow and there were a lot of big hits from both sides.

Disappointing, but we’ve four matches left and we’re not gone yet.

Ahane 2-22
Tom Morrissey 0-12 (0-7 frees)
Dan Minehan 1-3
Ronan Fox 1-2
Mark Donnellan 0-2
Paddy Morrissey 0-1

Jack Butler 0-1

Kildimo/Pallaskenry 2-16
Shaun Barry 1-8 (1-0 penalty, 0-7 frees)
Barry O’Connell 1-0
Darren O’Connell 0-2
Cathal Downes 0-1
Kyle Hayes 0-1
Jack O’Keeffe 0-1
Liam Griffin 0-1

Luke Flynn never played any minor or 20s for Limerick, but any time I’ve seen him, he’s looked very decent.

A late developer I suppose. He’s the standout forward for me in that team.
As far as I know, Denis O’Connor and Darragh Casey are the only two current G/B players to represent Limerick at underage level.

Intermediate hurling is serious bidness…

Great start tonight, couldn’t make it due to an unavoidable engagement elsewhere but a decent display by all accounts. Never really know where you stand until you play championship, Knockainey won the south league and were going well so was a bit apprehensive beforehand. As a team who came down last year they’d have fancied themselves this year to go straight back up.

G/B v a resurgent Feohanagh next Saturday night in NCW will draw a fierce crowd. Feohanagh got an unmerciful clipping off Murroe Boher last year but turned the tables yesterday with possibly the result of the weekend. They really should have beaten Na Piarsaigh in the group stage last year too which would have changed their season. At this level having a player like Sham Flan is like having three players. When their dander is up a tough nut to crack.

The three west teams all won in the group this weekend, St Kierans beating Croom so the group is delicately poised. Only the top 3 advance to the knock out stages so at least two teams with ambitions of going far will be gone.

In the other group expected wins for Croagh and Bruree in Round 1. Two serious outfits. The winner of that will top the group and go straight through to the semi final, the loser into a quarter final v team 3 in the other group.

@Gary_Birtles_Lovechi playing the Beal bocht but the bookies are rarely wrong. Croagh are favourites for good reason, quality all over. David Lynch to come back in yet too for them.

After a catastrophic defeat to Pallasgreen last year, Bruree are motoring nicely under Dave Deady. A potential banana skin v H/H safely negotiated. Plenty of firepower.

Croagh, Bruree, Feohanagh and Murroe Boher all head the betting, G/B will be fighting for a win next week to secure safety. Anything else a bonus.

I actually think Jack Cagney did as well.
