Reidy 6 is the most interesting thing there

Well able to look up and give good ball in fairness. Defensively he is a lot better than he was too.

Kiely has finally lost it.

Kiely likes a nice hurler at 6 obviously.

Exciting looking full forward line. Be great to see one of them really stake a claim this year.

Looking at the young talent coming through it’s an exciting time to be a Limerick hurling supporter.

Adam English on frees I presume if Reidy is at 6?

Difficult evening in Newry for the footballers, went three points up to begin with and then Down just dominated the rest of the contest. Big contrast in conditioning between teams, wonder have Down been back training alot longer than Limerick.

Carrying a few lads who are new to intercounty and may find their feet as year goes on. No real threat up front would be a big issue as would the keeper.

Tough start for Jimmy Lee and his management. Wonder where the year goes from here.

Down 3-16 Limerick 0-9

Just back from Newry.

Myself and @dodgy_keeper made the 6.5 hour round trip to Pairc Esler. Impressive little ground with a fine stand and clubhouse bar. Decent pint.

Limerick started the game like a train, holding possession for the first three minutes. After seven minutes we were 0-3 to 0-0 ahead, a tremendous curling effort from Ian Corbett, added to by two points from Peter Nash, one from play and one from a free.

Then Down woke up, and the procession began. A sweeping move led to a disallowed goal for the home side for a square ball infringement. The goal came just minutes later anyway, with Down #8 Odhran Murdock sticking a penalty away. Centre back Daniel Guinness then rammed home another goal, followed by a flurry of points for the home side. Murdock stuck another penalty away after 25 mins.

Limerick just couldn’t cope with the direct running, in particular from Down #11 speedster Liam Kerr and overlapping wing backs. The away side were reduced to continuous fouling in order to halt the Mourne onslaught, led by midfielder Odhran Murdock, who was dominant throughout. Ref Henry from Mayo eventually ran out of patience and gave Limerick #5 Colm McSweeney a black card for a cynical foul on Down #13 Oisin Savage.

Two more Peter Nash frees made it 3-8 to 0-5 for the home side at the break.

The second half was little more than a mediocre training match for both teams. Down sat a little deeper, content to let Limerick have the ball, knowing there was very little we could do with it. Down kicked 0-8 in the second half while playing in second gear. Shealan Johnston with the pick of their second half scores.

Cillian Fahy, Shane Costello and Peter Nash (2f) replied for the men in green in the second period.

The bright spots on the night were the performances of Tommy Childs at 8, who fielded some great ball in the first half, as was the consistency and movement of Peter Nash. He nailed all four frees and kicked another two lovely points from play. If only he had a bit more stature about him, because he is our only scoring threat up front when Danny Neville or Hugh Bourke are absent. Cathal Downes started at 11 instead of Emmet Rigter and saw a lot of ball.

Still the same problems as ever for Limerick - too slow moving the ball out of defence. Most passes are lateral/backwards. Very little direct kicking into the full line, and when there was, it was poorly executed. I just don’t understand the practice of keeping the ball on the 45, passing it over and back, with no forward movement or penetration, or nobody running off the shoulder. Everything is done so slow. We’re as predictable as the weather.

We don’t have bad players, I believe we just have poorly coached ones.

Fair play for trekking up. Did ye meet the Ballysteeners? There was 6 or 7 of them went up and made a night of it

Can’t have been too many Limericks there outside of ye
