The field is in Mungret
Doon Doon Doon Doon, I want you in my roomâŚ
Ya but the team is also Raheen based. Its not a ridiculous thing to say imo
I was in the stand around the half back line on the scoreboard end
I was down the other end sitting beside a die hard Kilmallock fan from Nap. I think she was happy enough.
SOB looks very promising alright
A hard-fought win in Ballybrown today against South Liberties. We were really hurting this week, we fucked up badly last weekend, we threw the game away and we all had to take responsibility for our roles in that. And after such a collapse, you are just desperate to go out and make amends.
And there was a big, big response tonight. It was a gritty, hard-fought victory, we had to dig deep but came out on top. We won a lot of dirty ball, had to work really hard for scores but we defended like Trojans. Have to be very impressed with the character of the team, considering what happened last week. We had a plan to deal with the various threats South Liberties posed, we stuck to the plan for 60 minutes this week and worked incredibly hard, and got the job done.
We had the slope, the wind and the sun in the eyes of their keeper in the 1st half, exactly the same as last week. But whereas last week we led at half-time and really struggled up the hill in the second half, this week we delivered a second half performance. We started a little slow, were 0-4 to 0-2 down before we really kinda woke up and got three points in a row from Darren, Barry & Kyle to put us into the lead. From them on, we did pretty much all the hurling in the first half but, my God, the wides. We missed 14 chances in the first half, some really bad ones to be quite honest. Working very good opportunities but just not converting them. Weâd have a little run of scores, then a big run of wides. We moved from 0-5 apiece to 0-9 to 0-5 up: a free from Barry after Darren was fouled, Kyle scored another while being fouled, Jack OâKeeffe got a nice point from outside and then another free after Kyle was fouled.
But a couple more wides before the break and a free & a point from play for Liberties saw them go in only 2 down with the slope, wind & low sun advantage to come. We were definitely a little edgy at the break, considering what happened last week. Only being two points up having done all the hurling was very annoying, last weekâs collapse was playing at the back of the mind and we knew that Anthony Nashâs puckouts would now be landing in front of the full-forward line and Barry Nash (who we had done a job on up until then, his only score in the first half came when we literally put one of our puckouts straight into his hand). But, last weekâs performance also focused the mind- we could not allow that to happen again, we were very conscious of not allowing it to happen again and we worked incredibly hard in the second half.
Liberties only scored 0-4 in the second half with all those advantages, having scored 0-7 in more difficult conditions in the first. And thatâs testament to the work of our defence. Now, they did hit some bad wides as we did in the first half, they hit a lot of frees wide. They ended up with 14 missed chances, we ended up with 20. Barry Nash ended with 0-2 from play but Tony McCarthy was generally on top in that particular duel inside, a brilliant performance from him. When Nash went out to centre-forward, he didnât get a puck off Cathal Downes.
Young CiarĂĄn Galvin made his first Championship start after he came on as a sub last week, a heroic performance from him. Came out with ball after ball, just cleaned up. This fella was a sub for our Junior Bs last year, but a powerful end of year with the county-winning U-19s and heâs now cleaning senior corner-forwards like Ken Byrnes & David OâNeill. Some improvement in such a short space of time, a great attitude. Peter Nash also showed his leadership as he came out with lots of ball, while Barry OâConnell and Shaun Barry were superb. Worked like dogs. We kept them to 0-6 from play, youâd have to be happy with that.
Forwards worked really hard too, none moreso Kyle. Itâs just a joy to watch him hunting down defenders, putting pressure on and the likes of Darren OâConnell & Paudi Hartigan were really good at that too. It was very tight for long periods of the second half, never more than 3 or 4 between the teams. But we finally kicked for home, Kyle hit a couple of points in a short space of time and then Barry OâConnell hit a lovely score from the middle of the field. They closed the gap a little again but in the final stages Jack OâKeeffe got his third from play after Darren found him with a crossfield pass. Kyle then scored an outrageous point off his right from the touchline, while getting a slap across the head. Then Davy Fitz, just out of minor, came up from wing-back to put us 7 up in stoppage time. McSweeney hit back with one for them before Liam Griffin came off the bench to drive over.
McSweeney was probably best in attack for them, he caught a few puckouts and I think he got 0-2 from play. Nash was quiet from open play. Ken Byrnes caught a couple of balls inside but was well closed-down after that and didnât really threaten. I have to say I was very impressed with Chawkieâs ability to take a lot of low, dropping balls with the sun in his eyes, Brian Ryan dropped a few in around the square. David Garry was the only fella who could even kinda keep with Kyle and landed a big score from out the field, but Kyle still went to town.
0-5 from play for Kyle, 0-3 for Jack OâKeeffe. Nash & McSweeney both got 0-2 for Liberties, their top scorers from play.
Overall, a great performance, a great win. Liberties were missing Tom Ryan who is a massive player for them, and Brian Nash was injured. But then, we were missing CĂan Hayes & CiarĂĄn Barry, and have a couple of players on the bench who are only just recovering from injuries. A month off now, and a local derby against an in-form Ballybrown to look forward to. Thatâs what Championship is all about.
Some impressive wins for some of the West Junior teams in Irelandâs best club competition, the Box Office Woodlands House Hotel County Junior A Hurling Championship
A lovely day in Feenagh for Bruree vs Feohanagh.
An underrated ground.
Feohanagh 0-9 Bruree 0-8 at HT.
Not a high-scoring contest. Bruree down a few players from last week, Mixer on the line, no Brian OâRourke either. And they suffered a massive blow when Sam Cronolly, their marquee forward, went off early after getting a point early on.
Theyâve done a good job on limiting the ball into Seamie Flanagan, Kieran OâDea is sitting right in front. Ball in isnât really sticking inside for either side, the extra men at the back for both sides on top.
Was very low-scoring but a rush of scores before the break made it slightly better. Interesting moment where Seamie intercepted a loose short puckout, interchanged handpasses but lost his hurley when through on goal and had to recycle back to Jack Kenny. Kennyâs got two, Butlerâs got a couple from play but has missed a couple of 65s.
All to play for, will be tight down the stretch.
Final score: Feohanagh 1-15 Bruree 0-15. This group is ridiculously tight now. Writing the report from the proper Championship traffic jam coming out of the side field in Feenagh.
A goal in this was always going to be crucial, and Feohanagh got it. Mike Fitz came on as a sub and made a huge difference, hit 1-1 from play and just got on a load of ball, hit about three wides aswell. Some asset to have a player like him and Iâd say they could have done with him last week. Such a powerful runner.
Feohanagh kept their noses in front for the half, hit a mound of wides but Seamus came out the field and got on an amount of breaking ball. The goal came from him winning a break from a Bruree puckout, found Fitzgibbon with a clever pass. Fitz set off on a run, broke a tackle, handpassed to Kieran Guina, who popped the ball back to him, broke another tackle and buried it.
Bruree really missed Cronolly in attack, struggled in attack but kept plugging away. They lobbed a few balls in around the square but Feohanagh repelled them for the most part. They were given a 20m free in stoppage time and they must have had flashbacks to the week before but the keeper got organised, he actually got rid of two players off his line but made the save from the free. Kieran OâDea isnât quite the Dow.
He did have to make one last save at the very death, a breaking ball around the large square was pulled on, it looped up through a mound of bodies but he got down to make the save and Eamonn Stapleton blew the full-time whistle.
Feohanagh just about deserved it. Having someone like Fitzgibbon to bring in was huge to supplement the two Flanagans and Butler. Lynch & Kenny got scores in the first half too, were quieter in the second. Alan Roche at centre-back was good again, although he was absolutely levelled by big Jimmy OâDea, Jimmyâs second monster hit of the afternoon.
Very warm day, not exactly free-scoring but tight Championship fare and it opens this group right up. Bruree will be praying Sam Cronollyâs injury isnât too bad.
Just back from Michael Fox Memorial Park, Kilfinane.
Gallant G/B 1-23 Hospital/Herbertstown 2-14.
Massive win for G/B, so disappointed not to get anything out of the local derby with Croagh last week but a superb response. Led from start to finish, a second Hospital goal deep in added time added some gloss to the score line.
Good spread of scorers for G/B, a lot of the young lads in only their first or second year playing adult hurling showed up well which is a real boost for the club.
Knockaderry overcame Kilmallock 2 by two points. The group is already devilishly tight. Croagh have won both their games by a point, Kilmallock have lost both their games by a point and two points respectively.
Croagh P 2 Pts 4 SD +2
G/B P 2 Pts 2 SD +5
Pallasgreen P2 Pts 2 SD +2
Knockaderry P2 Pts 2 SD -1
H/H P2 Pts 2 SD -5
Kilmallock P2 Pts 0 SD -3
Summer hurling on a beautiful sunny day, God bless the split season.
G/B v Knockaderry will be off the chain in Round 3. Itâll draw a colossal crowd.
The wedding didnât affect ye too badly
Who were the top scorers from both sides?
Think the scorers from this were:
Feohanagh 1-15
Jamie Butler 0-7 (0-5 frees)
Mike Fitzgibbon 1-1
Kieran Guina 0-2
Jack Kenny 0-2
James Guina 0-1
Cathal Lynch 0-1
Sean Flanagan 0-1
Bruree 0-15
Ronan OâHalloran 0-6 (0-5 frees)
Pa Deady 0-2
Sam Cronolly 0-1
Pa Lane 0-1
Pa Carey 0-1
Tommy Cronolly 0-1
Brian Sexton 0-1
Sam Williams 0-1
Matthew Howard 0-1
Butler missed 3 frees, Feohanagh missed 18 chances altogether. 8 in the first half, 10 in the second.
Ronan OâHalloran missed 3 frees for Bruree & Kieran OâDea missed 2 including the shot at goal at the end. They had 19 misses overall. 10 in the first half, 9 in the second.
Accuracy wasnât great. I didnât think the wind was that bad tbh, but obviously was some sort of a factor. What I will say about Feohanagh is that they were much better at quick frees. Butler set up two points by taking a quick free to a man in space, and they also tried that old sideline trick where one fella leaves it after having tapped it and Butler came in, rose it, but put it wide.
Sam Cronolly is also Brureeâs freetaker and they will be unhappy with the missed chances from frees, one was a very handy one but thatâs 5 misses overall from placed balls.
I tipped up Feohanagh as being way over priced this week at 5/2. Couldnât leave them go unbacked at that price. A few pound to collect off McAuliffeâs tomorrow now.
Iâve Croagh (won) in a double with Na Piarsaigh intermediates too, which if it comes off will make it a very profitable weekend. Na P v Caherline in Childers Road at 7.
It might have been different had Bruree hadnât had the injuries. Neither side were as impressive as they were last week, very different games for both. For Feohanagh to win without Sham getting any score is impressive, he played an unselfish role.
Iâll be in attendance in Claughaun tonight also.
Was at the game. Excellent summary. Mike Fitz probably the difference in the end. OâRourke and Cronolly big losses when they went off. I think only 5 allowed on line for 20 metre free so think it was the ref that clear the 2 lads rather than the goalie!
Half time in balmy Childers Road.
Na Piarsaigh 0-10 Caherline 0-06.
The underdogs are giving them loads of it and will have what breeze there is in the second half. Kevin Wixted excellent for Caherline, 0-03 from play.
DOW WATCH - 1 converted â65 and one good save from play.
HT in Claughaun: Na Piarsaigh 0-10 Caherline 0-6.
Itâs a lovely evening here. Na Piarsaigh look way better but arenât actually creating that many chances, probably guilty of overplaying the ball. Caherline are 4 down but have missed 3 frees, 2 very handy ones tbh. They also missed a point from play in front of the posts.
Na Piarsaigh raced into a 0-7 to 0-1 lead but Caherline have grown into the game. Youâd probably think theyâll need a goal to win it though. Kevin Wixted scored Caherlineâs first three points from play and then took over the frees after Brennan missed a couple.
For Na Piarsaigh, Evan Sweeney looks a real threat threat and has 0-2. Kevin Daly has 0-2 aswell, and the very lively John Fitz scored a great point early on. Shep just hit a big score from the middle.
Caherline playing Gary Murphy as a sweeper and he is getting on ball, Na Piarsaigh very physical. Dowling has just the one free, made a decent save early on too.
