Limerick GAA 2023 - League champions means nothing now 🐐

Na Piarsaighs 2nd team with a big win. Tough on Caherline.

Doon B ran out handy winners against askeaton in Mungret for a finish up.
Askeaton gave them bags of it first half and went in only two down 6-4 after missing a bagful of chances. You knew watching it that would come to haunt them and it did. Doon rattled off 5 or 6 without reply after the break and it was all over.
Better performance from our lads, but Doon the much better hurling team. Wouldn’t be afraid of them though, they didn’t like it all when they were being put under the cosh. We tired second half and they found space then. But a better team would be well able for them imo. Even if we had our full team we’d have given them a right run for it

Is Willie not hurling with ye this year?

Got injured playing football. Hopefully be back for the next batch of games

Na Piarsaigh 2-19 Caherline 0-14.

Score line a bit harsh on Caherline as Na P clipped in 1-01 in garbage time. Caherline fought manfully all through but the city outfit just had too much.

Evan Gilvarry wore 3 but played out around midfield and helped himself to 1-03 after the break. Impressive sub Dylan Lynch bagged 1-01 in the second half too. James O’Brien and Pat Gleeson are some centre back and centre forward pairing for this level.

Caherline were honest. I tipped them to go down but having seen most of the intermediate sides so far they are the equal of two or three other sides. Relegation is going to be a ferocious battle in this grade.

They were reduced to 14 late on, a straight red for a sub who had come in only minutes earlier. Ref Joe Mulcahy sending him off on the word of his umpire Mikey Browne following an off the ball incident.

The Dow made a sensational save late on to preserve his clean sheet.

Group 1 table after two matches.

Na Piarsaigh - 4pts.
Croom - 3pts.
Bruree - 2pts.
Feohanagh - 2pts.
Caherline - 1 pt.
Murroe/Boher - 0 pts.

I want a paragraph at least on the Dow. Intermediate some bear pit already. Murroe in trouble big time. Would be one of the greatest falls from grace of all time

Made a big impact. There was a load of room left in front of him that never really got closed off.

Ten years ago murroe would have had Tobin x 3, Paudie mc, willie Walsh, hickey and mikey Ryan who would have been all senior / under 21 panelist’s.

Some fall from grace.

FT: Na Piarsaigh 2-19 Caherline 0-14. Very comfortable in the end for Na Piarsaigh. The first goal really killed the game off and once NaP had that comfortable lead, they were able to extend it at their ease. Kevin Daly ran through the middle, drew the man, popped it off to Dylan Lynch, who buried it.

That gave them an 9-point lead. Caherline did actually get the next three scores, 2 frees from Kevin Wixted & a nice point for Paudie Wixted, who did well in the second half. But as Caherline pushed on, NaP exploited the space.

Impressed with John Fitz, very direct. Evan Gilvarry hurled a lot of ball. Gleeson got on a lot of breaks, although he actually hit a lot of wides from frees in the second half. James O’Brien caught a nice ball and is a physical presence. They brought on a few lively subs like Dylan Lynch, Marcus Hogan & Pa O’Neill, they just have ridiculous depth.

Gilvarry got the second goal after he ghosted in behind and was picked out by the other Daly.

The Dow made a flying save from James Enright at the end. Puckouts excellent. 1/2 frees.

Caherline didn’t get enough from Andrew Brennan, while Curly battled hard but must have hit 4 short into the Dow’s hand.

Red card for substitute Tiernan about 30 seconds after coming for an off-the-ball incident in the aftermath of the Dow save.

Almost a clean sweep.

Club GAA, especially at lower levels, is where you can really get an edge on the bookies. At pro sports and intercounty level they’ve too much info to consistently beat them.

Feohanagh at 5/2 was a crazy price, they’d played very well the week before, have four or five excellent club hurlers at this level and then have a four time All-Ireland winner up front who can be unmarkable on his day. Unfortunate for Bruree to lose a couple of players through injury but 5/2 was way, way too generous. Only kicking myself I didn’t have more on them.

Croagh. 13/8 - madness. They were always a good thing to beat Pallas. Again, kicking myself the price was gone by the time I backed them, so I had them at 4/7 as part of a double with Na Piarsaigh intermediates (1/3). Two bankers that paid out just a shade over evens.

Had a small single on Kilmallock, should have saved it for the banker double above which I couldn’t see being beat.

All in all a profitable weekend. We go again the first weekend of September for more intermediate hurling bankers.

Evan Gilvarry 1-3
Dylan Lynch 1-2
John Fitzgerald 0-3
Pat Gleeson 0-3 (0-3 frees)

Caherline 0-14
Kevin Wixted 0-9 (0-5 frees)
Gary Murphy 0-2 (0-2 frees)
Paudie Wixted 0-2
Andrew Brennan 0-1

That’s a serious spread of scorers for a lower intermediate team, and second team of the club.

Don’t seem to be really reliant on one player, there’s no proper standout. They’re all handy enough without being top class.

And that’s the thing, they’ll come up against sides who have a few players better than anyone they have, but will probably have a few way worse hurlers in their first 15 too.

On Croagh-Kilfinny’s win over Pallasgreen last night…

Pallas were guilty of giving away a lot of stupid frees inside their own half, any technical foul at all and Trevor Mann blew for it. Croagh on the other hand were more cute with the fouls - most of Colin Ryan’s frees were well away from Croagh’s goal. It was 0-11 to 0-7 for Croagh at half time and 7 of their points were from Cian O’Carroll frees. Andrew Meade was causing PJ Butler all kinds of bother at 14 for Croagh, scoring a point, producing a good save from Trevor McMahon as well as hitting four wides - Meade was getting on a lot of ball. Pallas were getting joy down the left side of their attack, with Colm McMahon and Christian O’Dwyer hitting a couple of nice scores to keep them in touch.

Second half was a similar story, although Pallas did cut down the fouling. Croagh tapped over 8 points, 5 from play, Seamus Hickey turning back the years with a couple of great points and Brian Hannan also getting on the score sheet. Two goal opportunities early on for Pallas were snuffed out by C/K. High ball into the box with the sun was causing difficulties for C/K keeper Dave Lynch. Scores from Kevin Barry and Owen Roche kept Pallas in it, along with a glorious Colin Ryan sideline score . 5 points in it at the 60 minute mark, before Pallas struck for a goal, i couldn’t see who got it but they pulled on a high ball into the square, this was soon followed by a point which brought it back to the minimum. Too little too late as the whistle soon blew for full time.

Croagh without arguably their best three players for the opening two rounds, will be quite happy to be topping the group going into the 3 week break. Jack Lenihan, Barry Lenihan and Adam Shanagher will all be available for the Hosptial game. Pallas now find themselves in a scrap to secure a quarter final spot, and face pointless Kilmallock in 3 weeks in a must win tie.

What’s Flanagan’s record for limerick in games he’s started I wonder? Interestingly when we lost to Kilkenny in 19 he didn’t play. Is he unbeaten in games he has started as a Limerick senior?

He definitely started in Ennis in 2018 and I think he started in Thurles in 2019 too.

He started in thurles in 2019.

Is there no more pay at the gate for club games? My father would always go to games but doesn’t have a smart phone or computer so now says he can’t go anymore, is there anything I can do for him?
