What a wonderful day. Didn’t the local press give John Allen a bit of stick in the lead up too.
He was confident that day.

2014 was the peak by a mile. Context is key. Everyone thought they could win it after 2013.
A few great games in the Provinces, proper old school knockout games on three consecutive Saturday’s in July, the day of the rain in August, Tipp’s wrists in full flow against Cork and it culminated in the standard of Tipp and Kilkenny going through the roof in the Final(s).
Lads were trying to claim 2018 was better here a few months back. The standard had gone back a fair bit by then. Bar the semi final weekend it was very poor for the most part.
That Tipp hall of fame team of the last decade were a cracking team in fairness. I’d say a good four or even five of them over that decade would make the current Limerick team.
I ran the algorithms on this last week and its a 9-6 split in favour of Tipp at best for Limerick.
Incorrect.
Its not.
I was actually in a generous mood when running it and found a spot for Gillane and all.
Lookit, you’d have Kelly and Callanan, obviously. Brendan Maher at midfield. None of the backs. Maybe Cummins, and maybe Noel McGrath? Many other fine players in that Tipp team over the years but there’s just no room for them. Honourable mentions to Paudie and Lar.
To be fair Ronan Maher on his day would get in ahead of Dan Morrissey
At full back presumably? That’s an interesting pick actually, you could add him to the maybe list with Cummins and McGrath.
Kelly was done really by then. Callanan and B Maher are the only 2.
Paidi Maher was better than any of the Limerick half back line
DOD, WOD, GM, TM, DM, SF & MC would be a long way short of the Hall of Famers.
Limerick are better than the sum of their parts which is a credit to Kiely and Kinnerk but individually a lot of them arent hectic.
That Tipp team were of very dubious character. That’s why theyll be regarded as a very good team but not a great team
Id take Byrnes every day of the week over him.
Hayes is a better back than P Maher and a better forward than PB Maher.
Hard to believe the Tipperary fella reckons the Tipp fella is best and the Limerick fellas think the Limerick fella is best.
Stunned
Declan Hannon > Christy Ring and Tipp claiming a one-in-a-row merchant is better than him.
Hannon did it in the championship as a forward too, something Paudie Maher could never do either. Didn’t have the hurling. David Breen sorted him out a few times ffs.
Amazing
The Limerick lads can’t seem to grasp the concept that the standard of hurling is absolutely awful at present.
I suppose its only natural when they think hurling was only invented in 2018.
Tipp actually had to face a few decent teams back then, not like Limerick this year falling over the line against an average Clare, and Kilkenny and Galway teams miles past their best
