Limerick GAA 2023 - League champions means nothing now 🐐

Not sure about the black shoes with the cream suit…

The two lads obviously still getting dressed by their mothers

Complete brain fart.he ran out of goals like he left the immersion on…

As I said beforehand, I was just a little worried that we might struggle to ground ourselves after the highs of last week but we got the job done against Blackrock. They are now relegated after three years at senior, a couple of very narrow defeats along the way, but those are the breaks, I guess.

Obviously, the main talking point of the game was the performance of Kyle. Whereas Ballybrown altered their structure and gameplan specifically to deal with Kyle, and probably did that to a point, Blackrock just didn’t have any capable of doing that job. So they didn’t even really try; and went to play their own game and Kyle just ran riot. He scored 0-10 from play, he was unlucky not to get a goal, a very good save from Mikey Duggan. He was still tackling everything that moved, a major puckout target when we needed him, just a phenomenal player.

I suppose when he’s in that kind of form, it’s hard not to just try and feed him at every opportunity. And we did that, I guess. We definitely went through a couple of lull periods where we just kinda went through the motions but generally we defended superbly, maybe just need to work on our deliveries. Our wing-backs, Davy Fitz & Cathal Downes, were absolutely superb. Scored 0-3 between them, but also directly laid on another 0-4 between them. Shaun Barry in the middle of the field was superb aswell, just cleaned up on dirty well, nailed his frees and got a couple from play too.

They had a bit of momentum in the middle of the second half where they had tagged on a few scores and then won a penalty. There was never any doubt in my mind that Chawkie was going to save it; Quilty put it at a nice enough height for him too but it was a good stop. John saved a penalty against Paudie Leahy in the drawn final in 2019 but we couldn’t kick on that day. Three years later, we used the momentum to blitz them. Chawkie delivered the hammer blow himself at the end, firing home a penalty of his own after Ryan Kelly was fouled for the second week in a row.

2 goals & 2 penalties saved in the 4 Championship games for Chawkie so far. He will be annoyed that Quilty did score a goal from a 20m free at the very end, a clean sheet would have been nice after defending so well throughout.

Blackrock battled throughout, but missed a lot of frees in the first half when they were still in the game which would have sapped their confidence. Quilty was probably their standout player, struggled to get scores from play from their attack. Realistically, without getting any sort of handle on Kyle, they were always going to find it hard to win. If they had just crowded him, our other players would have found other space and it’s not like it was just a one-man show, even though a lot did go through him. We still scored 1-17 (the same tally as we scored against Ballybrown) from our 14 players + subs.

So it’s in our hands now; a win against Garryspillane and we go up to Senior A. A loss and we mightn’t even make a quarter-final, we would be depending on other results. So still a lot to do. Garryspillane beat Mungret, who beat us, and put themselves in a position to beat Ballybrown just couldn’t see it home. It’ll be a very different game to the weekend anyway; after seeing what Kyle did, they’re not just going to let him saunter around, picking off points. They got Coughlan sent off on Thursday by riling him up, got Kyle sent off back in 2018. They know all the tricks in the book and we need to rise above that and just go out and hurl.

I also went to Na Piarsaigh & Adare yesterday, and it was miserable enough fare tbqh. I don’t like Adare but it was actually depressing how far off the pace they were. Their team was set up to contain, but didn’t actually do any containing. It wasn’t as if they weren’t working hard, they were, they just didn’t go after Na Piarsaigh in any of the places where they might actually have got joy and were just wiped out as a result. Stuff like Peter Casey being able to touch a puckout down to himself and also pick up the break was just madness. A 2-man inside forward line lacking proper mobility, two of their best scorers deep in defence but not really stopping but Na Piarsaigh scoring.

NaP were 14 up at half-time and it led to the second half being absolutely putrid as NaP didn’t really extend themselves but Adare weren’t exactly good enough to really reel in the lead; think Adare outscored them 6 to 5 in the second half but it wasn’t a good watch.

In the first half, Peter Casey was probably the best player on show. Maybe only little cameos but he showed his class. Breen is some poacher; two goals, both from rebounds. Both from Conor Boylan shots saved by PJ Hall, I think. Boylan himself looked dangerous but didn’t actually rack up much of a score. Downes was decent on the wing. Daithi Dempsey was quiet enough, and was taken off at half-time. I suppose Connolly on him would have been seen as a success, but still seems like a waste to me. Keith Dempsey did well enough at midfield too. Jerome Boylan is back but was peripheral enough; but in reality, they were totally dominant.

Na Piarsaigh pushed Ronan Lynch into full-forward for the last 15 minutes or so, obviously trying something, he didn’t puck a ball after that and had obviously done plenty of hurling as the spare man at the other side. Mike Casey was very good. Two of the Na Piarsaigh full-back line, Kieran Kennedy & Gearoid Synnott, scored points from play. They also burned Evan Gilvarry from their intermediates when coasting; be a loss to the second team.

John Fitz got a few nice points from distance with loose balls but Willie was really their only standout in attack. Some of the subs they brought in: Sean Connolly & Charlie McCarthy made a bit of an impact in attack but the game was over. They just seem to be gone way back from last year; missing lads like Mike Keane, Eoin Ryan, Davy Lyons, Shane O’Connor, Wayne Mac (although he was playing earlier in the year) compared to last year; especially with Hannon & Mark Connolly gone back into defence.

Na Piarsaigh 2-20
Adrian Breen 2-3
Kevin Downes 0-7 (0-3 frees, 0-1 '65)
Peter Casey 0-3
Will Henn 0-2
Keith Dempsey 0-2
Conor Boylan 0-1
Kieran Kennedy 0-1
Gearoid Synnott 0-1

Adare 0-13
John Fitzgibbon 0-7 (0-3 frees)
Willie Griffin 0-3 (0-2 frees)
Sean Connolly 0-1
John McSweeney 0-1
Charlie McCarthy 0-1

Made a second trip to Ballybrown this weekend for Murroe/Boher vs Feohanagh. Feohanagh were obviously without Sham Flan; James Guina has done his cruciate & Mike Fitz wasn’t playing either. They still had a lot of decent players out but Murroe/Boher absolutely blitzed them.

Three losses so far for M/B, although they were very unlucky against NaP2, probably were the better team against one of the favourites for the competition. Obviously seriously lacking confidence after back-to-back relegations but they just blew Feohanagh away today. They played with the hill in the first half, and racked up a big, big score; which turned out to be an insurmountable lead.

Feohanagh actually didn’t even take a single shot from play in the first half; Jamie Butler hit three frees but also had a penalty brilliantly saved by Killian Quaid, he’s an unbelievable shot stopper. Made three great saves today as Feohanagh threw the kitchen sink at them as the game went on.

Murroe/Boher were just totally dominant all over, they really didn’t look like a team battling against relegation. Mikey Ryan (M) inside in the full-forward line was probably their main man; he caused absolute havoc with his direct running and was hacked down on a few occasions. He ended up getting his man sent off for multiple high challenges, and one of those led to a second half 20m free which was rifled to the net by Aaron Kennedy.

The excellent Jack Nicholas had scored a first-half goal by bursting forward from midfield, he’s a serious operator. Small in stature but a tough little fucker and a serious burst of pace. His brother, Mark, was in midfield alongside him today and also had a really good game. They had a very good range of scorers; but the win was probably built on the platform of their half-back line of Conor Byrnes, Darragh Kennedy & Finn Hourigan. They were all excellent today and Feohanagh just really struggled to win puckouts or get past that line at any stage. Obviously Flanagan was a big loss.

Feohanagh are still favourites to make the quarter-final, just need some sort of result against Croom. They lost the head a bit today and maybe could have had a couple of other red cards, lowered the blade a little bit in the second half. Only scored 1-1 from play, big Jack Kenny knocked in a rebound after a good Killian Quaid save from Cathal Lynch. Murroe/Boher must be thinking “what if”; had Hourigan & Euan Sheridan been available for the first two games, they probably wouldn’t be in this position; both were excellent again today. But, as it is, they have a big battle against Caherline to come. Lose that and today’s win isn’t worth a fuck and they still will end up in relegation.

Murroe/Boher 2-21
Aaron Kennedy 1-13 (1-10 frees)
Jack Nicholas 1-1
Mikey Ryan (M) 0-2
Michael Ryan (N) 0-1
Mark Nicholas 0-1
Brian O’Keeffe 0-1
Kevin Clohessy 0-1
Dylan Sheehan 0-1

Feohanagh 1-07
Jamie Butler 0-6 (all frees)
Jack Kenny 1-0
John F Reidy 0-1

Did you hear anything on Cappamore vs Knockainey from earlier?

Cappamore won that, is all I heard.

Knockaderry pull it out of the fire and win by 5. Huge result for them.

Hospital, Kilmallock 2 and Pallasgreen all on two points now ahead of the final round next Saturday in terms of avoiding the relegation final.

Hospital and Pallas play each other. If G/B beat Kilmallock 2 then it’ll come down to head to head between Kilmallock 2 and the loser of Hospital/Pallas, I think.

Kilmallock beat Pallas but in turn Hospital beat Kilmallock 2. So many permutations - all three teams could end up on 3 points also.

Croagh v Knockaderry
G/B v Kilmallock 2
Pallasgreen v Hospital.

What a championship.

Croagh P4 Pts 8 (SF*)
G/B P4 Pts 6 (QF*)
Knockaderry P4 Pts 4
Pallasgreen P4 Pts 2
Hospital P4 Pts 2
Kilmallock 2 P4 Pts 2

That is so hard to call

The standard of reporting on club games from the @limericks is outstanding. A great thread. A pity a few more counties couldn’t do the same instead of throwing sly digs

Hmmmmm “total outsiders”……I think not.

Cute G/B hoorism

I think so.

Good summary. But with Na Piarsaigh playing Bruree, next weekend, the winner will progress as top spot. Head to head rule.

Overall a funny group two. Surely Croagh will rest easy and recharge given the opportunity.

Cappamore still with in the mix considering who they play. Knockainey look doomed. Do you know who got sent off for Effin tonight?

Of course, head to head will apply in that scenario. A bad oversight on my behalf.

Bruree will fancy that one, Gilvarry will be a loss for Na Piarsaigh 2.

That group is nicely set up ahead of the final round of matches.

Na Piarsaigh v Bruree to decide who tops the group and advances directly into the semi final.

Feohanagh v Croom to decide the second quarter final spot.

Caherline v M/B to determine who avoids the relegation final.

Nothing obvious anyway.

In fairness to the man he let the game flow generally.
