Well, Kiely isnât a judge and he wasnât present at the occasion, so it would be remiss of him to get involved in that without all the facts. All he can do is enforce the internal rules he has set.
If Simon did assault someone, he will be charged with such, and the law will deal with it. But, realistically, it sounds like it wonât go much further because there wasnât much in it. These kind of incidents happen in every town across Ireland every weekend and donât really go anywhere. Itâs not good; some people probably shouldnât drink at all if they canât handle it and two intercounty hurlers should know better to be honest. Itâs done now anyway and Simon has to take his punishment as it comes.
If you think Richie Hogan isnât talented enough a hurler to know exactly what he was doing with his arms and elbow, then youâre a poor judge. Ivâe never quite understood the kk anger about that sending off. It was a straight red all day long I felt.
This headbutt thing is just depressing. Rightly or wrongly, these lads are role models. You can argue the ins and outs of whether they should be, but itâs just a fact that they are. It may well cost the lad involved an all Ireland medal, which is a heavy punishment. It may result in a criminal record **, an even heavier punishment.
But, and itâs quite a big but (pun unavoidable), these lads should be aware of just how much damage a headbutt can do. Iâve seen life changing damage from them. It is really not acceptable.
** Probably wonât as Iâd imagine charges unlikely to be pressed after all parties have been spoken to/leant on, and there is both an innate decency in any of the players I have met, and a dislike of all the fuss.
