Ye should be better than that. When Limerick went and had a cut they were well able. Clare are on an upward curve at the moment and have been progressing while Limerick regressed, at the same time I thought we were going to go backwards this year when a few of the older crew pulled the pin. The young lads that came in, bought in and thatâs the difference for any second tier county. The Super 8 would be the upper end of our ambition realistically, but that shouldnât be beyond Limerick either when theyâre going well.
Just very sad to see how far the footballers have fallen.
Put a modicum of professionalism in place and there is the bones of a competitive side there. Getting hammered by an average enough Clare side (no offence to them) - terrible.
The likes of Kearns, Lucey, Galvin, Buckley, Ranahan and Co lifted us from the foot of Division Four to respectability. Hard to believe we were actually Division One at one stage. Then that one decent u-21 side grew old together and we saw what unfolded tonight. Itâs sickening.

Iv a yard brush out the back in better shape than you ffs your ribs must be out through your jumper
There will always be 6 or 7 counties in a shambles. Being fit and well organised with a bit of spirit is enough to be in division 3 nearly
Clare are a good side and Limerick are starting pretty much from scratch.
From what I have heard they have been very professional and the players made a huge effort. They were seriously disrupted by the club scene and hurling. Clare together longer and clearer run
It shouldnât take and cork man to point out these things to you
Billy gets a big oooffft for that. As Dodgy said, a sound man doing his best.
Basic housekeeping like teamsheets etc should be taken care of as a given. There are far greater underlying issues though and I think theyâve all contributed to Billyâs frustration. Players donât want to play for Limerick. Football is seen as an irritation by many supporters and many board officers.
How do you fix it though? Phrases like promoting and investing in football are easy catch-alls and require real susbstance behind them to make a difference. The will just isnât there on too many levels (players, clubs, boards, sponsors) for it to be rescued.
Bar the period from 2000-2010 it has always been thus. As a young fella, Iâd loved to have played hurling for Limerick but I wasnât good enough. I wasnât good enough to play inter-county football either but ended up doing so. Such was the lot of Limerick football in the mid-90âs. Training was a moveable feast, you wore your own club togs and socks most of the time and got thrown a Limerick set the night before championship. Like now, there were some very good and dedicated people involved but there were never enough of them. When the football board was set up it was mainly to kick the issue to one side so it wasnât the main county boardâs problem anymore. âThere ye go lads, ye have yeâre own board. Sort it all out there now like good boysâ
Iâve said it before, and took flak, but maybe you have to destroy Rome to rebuild it. Limerick should consider the Kilkenny route and withdraw from senior inter-county. It could either be the spark that provokes a serious reappraisal but, more than likely, I fear that it would simply die without a whimper.
Sad days. Hon Billy Lee.
Iâm sorry but Clare are not a particularly good side, in my opinion (still miles better than us). They laboured for long enough tonight against the weakest Limerick side in two decades. Will lose to the first half decent team they meet in the qualifiers.
The sad fact is there is close to zero interest in playing football for the county. Wouldnât hold it against anyone for turning down an invite but there is just a general malaise now. Talk about pissing into the wind. Have had a couple of relatively good u-21 sides that have matched Cork and Kerry but itâs a case of one step forward, four steps back. Itâs just hard to watch. No criticism of anyone involved in the current set up. Theyâve an impossible task.
Yerra tis only football
Clare are a very good side.
Main point is their interference in April was far less from what I can make out and what I was told about Limerick who basically had no full squad training due to club games
Agree though in general, IC is a waste of time unless you have buy-in.
Too much hassle for little reward.
2nd tier competitions only answer
Tonight was the final straw for me. Time for a two (or even three) tier championship. Limerick - at this moment in time - had no business playing Kerry in a fortnight. Aim for promotion to start off. Games against teams of your own ilk and gradual progression.
Only sport in the world that doesnât have levels.
We used to play in Mid-Cork Cup/Championship years ago. Junior at the time.
We got 3 points on Intermediate teams and 6 on senior. Was a great competition.
Fell apart because Ballincollig and macroom didnât like âlosingâ to Junior teams and pulled out.
Often wondered even if just for provincial of that would make it a little more interestimg
Absolutely bizarre. And yet some of the limerick players would probably oppose it
Dull morning here in Ballyragget. Had a shower overnight. Whatâs it like in the mid west?
Ego.
There was some sort of study/quick questionnaire done in last while about it, the most against tiered competition were players from least successful counties.
Which is a bit of insight as to why they are unsuccessful
You are spot on Kev about having two or three tiers. A national final in Croke park (semis also?) should be a big incentive. Funnily enough a typical lower tier side would be more likely to get to croke park than a side sitting in the second half of the upper tier (monaghan, Kildare etc).
And then an all star side per tier.
This has worked for hurling.
Something along the lines of the Limerick Football Championship would work well but with a 2 up / 2 down system.
Senior - 12 teams, two groups of 6 top 3 progress to knock out, bottom team in each group goes down.
Intermediate - same but two finalists go up.
What levels has American Football?
A 2x6 on top with a pair of 2 x 5 would do.
I only properly realised this week in a conversation with a work colleague (tipp!) that the new provincial hurling format is going to drive huge change in the gaa, far more significant than the backdoor. That colleague has a close relative at the top table in tipp gaa and talked about where this is going. They hope the hurling is now sorted and are waiting for the outcome. Football has to change and the super8 is a tryout
How is hurling sorted?
2/3 of the country has no interest in it
