I watched that game on Cape Clear, Iām quite surprised that Downes hasnāt even seen bench time this year,

7 years is a long time.
Iāve always liked him but heās just not a better hurler than Casey, Dowling, Ryan or Nash who are our full-forward line subs. Competition is cut-throat.
Downes is a far far better hurler than Barry Nash or David Reidy .

Barry Nash is a super hurler, he has all the ability in the world? Work rate/application is his issue if anything. Downes still has all the limitations to his game that he had when he was 19 really. Nash clearly has the superior hurling ability.
Reidy and Downes arenāt really in direct competition, Reidy is a much better sharpshooter though.

I think Nash is very similar to Downes. I donāt think heās any better yet really. I am surprised Downes doesnāt make the bench, but there you go.
Similar style-wise, Iād agree. A better hurler though.
