I’m nearly certain they fucked them out the year after they won it. Think they had been in and out of the championship before then, but they generally faded after the college year ended. Around that time also UL became a massive university and just had way too much talent for the Limerick championship. They were grand as long as they weren’t winning, similar to UCD in the Dublin hurling.
Pats were always there but were very weak in the nineties but are enjoying a renaissance now . Claughaun were always hemmed in by Monaleen , Pats and Christians . Their home turf of singland , garryown , Childers road , Dublin road etc became very grey and there isn’t many young areas near them .
I still say that the GAA shamefully never had a really visible presence in the newer working class estates . O malley park is a mile or so from Claughaun and they should have made inroads there . Moyross never had a GAA presence either .
Your a prick
The 21s garde is dying out in limerick. An serious waste of money by clubs.
Hurling played when the county teams are in full swing. The football played in the depths of winter.
The reason for the grade is presumably to stop drop-off after minor. Once people are done with minor, there tends to be a fairly big exodus from teams and I guess that the reason for U-21 is to somewhat alleviate that, keep them involved.
But we had 7 minor players starting at the weekend, and players just won’t be bothered if the county players aren’t going to be involved either and it doesn’t do what it it intends at all.
I’m aware of the reasons but the timing of the competitions don’t help. Suppose a lad is knocked out of the minor football championship in July, then his 21’s championship for the following year won’t start until nearly 14/15 months later.
It’s pointless. If your not touching the adult teams by 18 your going to be lost to game regardless of 21s. If your 19 and don’t have much chance of making the grade at your club is much more fun to tog out for the juniors in June and July on a Sunday morning.
We could win a football title if we could be bothered.
More in your line to worry about the local soccer team
Sporting Kilmallock
The strength of football in West Limerick was largely down to the junior and inter teams . They clubs like Athea , Glin and Griffins particularly always had big passionate support . The big two population towns of NCW and Abbeyfeale had underachieved over the years with NCW particularly being guilty . Rathkeale are back but it was a GAA wasteland for years . Senan’s and Askeaton are enigmas . Drom/b were a hurling club who came on a phenomenal crop around 2000 .
West Lk is a decent football territory .
For what it’s worth, of the Limerick footballers playing at the weekend, the breakdown per division was:
West- 13
City- 5
East- 2
South- 0
And two of those City players are from Kildimo/Pallaskenry which isn’t really City. But I know that Billy Lee is from the West and is probably more familiar with players from there but you would wonder whether 65% West players is representative of the strength of West football.
Obviously there are no St. Pat’s & Na Piarsaigh players on the panel, two senior City clubs, with most of their best players rejecting the call afaik. Monaleen have a decent representation as would be expected (and neither Donal O’Sullivan nor Brian O’Donovan featured at the weekend when they have started every other game so far). Although Paul White, Daniel Daly, Paul Hannon & Jamie Lee are all West players who have got a decent amount of gametime, who didn’t feature.
But I suppose the strangest thing is there isn’t a single player from the South on the panel at all. I know it might be more of a hurling area but not a single player from Ballylanders, Galbally, Bruff, Galtee Gaels? And Croom provided some of the best footballers we’ve had in the past 15-20 years.
Yes , the south is a strange one .
Priorities, priorities.
Croagh has the Hogan Stand
That was slightly tongue in cheek.
Ballylanders only representative for years was an outsider. I believe a few others have been asked and turned it down. As a team they always seemed to perform better than the sum of their parts.
Galbally have been very mediocre for years, as have Bruff and Galtee Gaels. Those clubs have had no less representation than similar type clubs in the west.
Jim Bob would be playing with the footballers you’d imagine if available.
Galtee Gaels are a long way from past glories sadly. Hospital would have been a decent contributor to the footballers in the 90’s but again they’ve been in decline a while
