That’s a fairly limited definition of marquee.
If he can score 3 points from play a game as well as banging over all the frees, I’ll be happy enough with him. Need a couple more to contribute that too.
Marquee is one of the top players in the country for prolonged period of time.
Exactly that is his level. If he is fighting fit he is one of better forwards.
Agreed. Took kirby a few years to cut it as well.
Clearly Reid, Callanan, and Hogan are (much) better players now at 28 than they were at the age of 20, as you would expect with any elite player in any sport. The point is they were good enough in 2009 at the age of 20 to either start or come on as subs for the two best teams in the country. Dowling is nowhere near the level these lads were at when they were 20, let alone now. I’m not knocking him, he’s a good hurler, and maybe he’ll come good this year as Limerick demolish all around them on their way to an AI… then again…
Last time, slowly now:
It took Reid and Callanan their early 20s of being on and off the team before they improved to the level they are at today.
Two marquee forwards, arguably the best in the country, didn’t reach that level until their mid 20s, and struggled to make their teams in their early 20s.
That was the only point. I hope you got it this time.
Plus they didn’t have to be fucked in age 20 and be expected to carry the team like we do with any talent.
No offence mate, you know a lot about hurling and speak a lot of sense but last I heard you were 22. I don’t think you can speak with any authority about anything before the current decade. What is your memory of Kirby in a Limerick shirt?
Let’s try to let him absorb one this a a time here, he’s been struggling with this one.
According to the Cambridge dictionary a Marquee is a large tent used for eating and drinking,if Dowling doesn’t fit that description who does?
I would consider it to be standout compared to the average player, and would generally be a forward too. Marquee back doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.
I would consider all the lads mentioned in the original post to be marquee, forwards who would change the dynamic of any team that they are in. I think Shaughs in 2007 was a gamechanging forward in that mould. I wouldn’t say he was ever top 3 or 4 on a consistent basis but Kilkenny had most of those.
Shaughs had the ability but he didn’t stamp his authority on the Munster or all ireland final in his best year for limerick.
Is Dowling developing a bit of an attitude lads? Did a lot of bitching to the ref yesterday.
Shur didn’t Shefflin try and ref games all during his career - as Joe Canning correctly pointed out - and it never did him or his team any harm.
We’ve been too nice as a team for far too long, give me lads getting in the refs ear all day long. We could have done with Dowling below in Wexford Park to tell Kirwan to wake the fuck up.
Can be improved though… ball and wall × 100 hours between now and summer…
lads ye finished 3rd in 1b joke or wha
Just making sure wed stay to give ye a warm welcome back next year.
If it was anyone else saying what you are they would be chased out of the thread.
Last I heard, for someone to be considered a top, top forward, the player needs to be able to use his two sides at the very least.
You really are making an ass of yourself continually bleating on about Reid, Callanan & Hogan. All 3 of them have started 90% + of games for the teams they were on panels of.
You make it sound like they sat on benches for years on end.
