Good win for Monaleen in the premier intermediate final yesterday. Cappamore started fast and an Andy Murphy goal was the first score of the game. Joe Lonergan added another and they led by 6 halfway through the first half.
Different story after the break as Monaleen brought Peter Russell out around midfield and he took over the show there. 10 points in a row had them three ahead before Cappamore rallied to level it with time almost up. Monaleen edged a point ahead and struck for the winning goal after a John Nicholas run and shot was blocked by the goalie into the path of Andrew La Touche who buried the rebound. 1-17 to 2-11 it finished. Very good game in fairness. Nice crowd, good atmosphere. Kilmallock is the best place to play these games. It’d have been lost inside in the Gaelic Grounds.
In the curtain-raiser, Knockainey deservedly won the senior county cup with an 0-15 to 0-11 win over South Liberties in a snoozefest, notable only for the referee being replaced after 20 minutes. Apparently, the appointed ref never turned up and Mike Sexton, who was due to ref the premier final afterwards, stood in until a replacement (Johnny Murphy) arrived.
