@myboyblue, did you pay much attention to how Dublin lined out on the field the other night? Obviously Iāve read the team list in the papers and see that Rushe has been restored to centre back but I wouldnāt rely on the accuracy of (m)any GAA journalists writing in the dailies. Where was Sutcliffe operating? Actually set out their team for the benefit of Teege and the other Limerick posters please.
If it was a straight choice between him and Breen I would no problem.
Especially for the ones that didnāt see the game.
Totally fair enough. What half forward line would you go with anyway?
Very tough. There isnāt a line on the field Iād be sure about at this stage. Question marks everywhere. Iād like to start a team along the below lines, but itās too late in the year to be trying most of these things now, should have been sussed in the league.
Quaid
Walsh Richie Condon
Hickey Wayne P OāBrien
Ryan Browne
S OāBrien Gav Lynch
Dowling Downes Mulcahy/Tobin/Hannon
Quaid seems to be the best option for now.
Havenāt seen enough of potential corner back replacements to comment but Iād be open to either or both of the corner backs being replaced.
Hickey tries to play too much hurling to be in the corner, watching him trying to out catch bubbles the last day was killer. Maybe centre back? He is a great player on his day. Wayne has played his way back into the team for me. Iād give OāBrien a few games here to see. But itās a bit late in the day to be trying stuff.
Two boys are midfield end of. Why he broke them up mystifies me.
The half forward line is all about addressing our ball winning problem. Iād like to see S OāBrien given a go here, seems to love going forward and can win ball. Gav did well here for Kilmallock. Lynch needs a bit of space to operate in.
Imagine Downes/Dowling/Hannon FF line all going well
More immediately
Quaid
Walsh Richie Condon
S OāBrien Wayne Gav
Ryan Browne
Hannon P OāBrien Lynch
Dowling Downes Hickey/Mulcahy/Tobin (in a third midfielder role).
Condon wonāt be available against Dublin due to injury.
That seems like a lot of work. Sutcliffe played left half forward. Rushe was picked centre back but drifted btween both lines as he was unmarked and dropped to full back line when Laois launched bombs from Reillys puck outs. He mopped up quite a lot.
Kelly didnāt play. The Shuttes stood out. Keaney played full forward and dominated both men who tried to track him.
That Crummey fella has a ridiculous name, and the Dublin fans around me seemed quite excited by some fella they referred to as āCianoā and āBolesieā.
Oh and Sutcliffe hit Joe Fitzpatrick a belt of the hurl into the balls while waiting for a Dublin puck out, christ I nearly felt it myself.
Laughable for lads to be calling for Mulcahy to be dropped. Heās our best forward for Christ sake!
Didnāt do much against Clare but still chipped in with 1-01 that won us the game.
Even on a day like Sunday with awful conditions that wouldnāt suit him he scored two points and set up Dowlingās goal. What kills us is that we donāt have a plan to work him and lynch into space with low driven passes that theyād thrive on. I personally think both players are better than Shane OāDonnell (probably a touch of green tinted specs) but Clare constantly bring him into the play by creating space. In the match against us almost everything Clare did went through him. We never play like that, just drive it up and hope for the best.
Iād expect a reaction against the Dubs. We surely have to be up for. Surelyā¦!
Fair enough we all have different preferences. I agree on things that should have been tried during the league, Quaid or Hickey need to be tried at 6, too soon for Byrnes I think.
I canāt see how you can start Paudie anywhere at this stage. Heās not a wing back, he doesnāt get about enough for midfield and he certainly isnāt a centre forward. You donāt like Breen, grand, but heād be far more effective at 11 than Paudie, even if he is awkward to look at.
Ideally Iād want Downes at 11 in the future. Itād be great if we had half back cover and could move Gavin forward but we havenāt. Gavin, Downes, Hannon would be a decent line. Next year thereās the two Lynchās who are both probably best at midfield or half forward.
You couldnāt play Hannon corner forward either, he was lost at full forward even.
Agree on midfield, for now. Ryanās form seems to have dipped though, heās living on last yearās performances for me. S OāBrien could be a good option here.
I honestly donāt know what the story is with Hickey. He cleaned everyone he marked last year, Noel McGrath, Horgan, and dominated TJ Reid who was in the running for HOTY. Maybe heās been playing injured which would explain why he wasnāt used even with a corner back home off injured against Westmeath.
For the next game I think thereās only a few changes you an make and hope that players like Hannon and Hickey are going to come good. Presuming Condonās out:
Quaid
Walsh McCarthy Hickey/Seanie
Wayne Gavin Hickey/Seanie
Ryan Browne
Breen Hannon Downes/Dowling
Lynch Downling/Downes Tobin
Iād start Tobin because heās a quality player and great to work and tackle, he also must be ripping for a chance to start and the speed of a fresh Mulcahy coming in with 20 to go would be a nightmare for any corner back. Worth a try and at the least you wouldnāt lose much between them in the change.
Not comparable players.
Iāve said it a number of times, we use him terribly. Not sure weāll be rectifying that by the weekend though sadly. I think he needs to be a little further out so he can get on the ball more, he is a great play maker, and might be able to play some decent ball to our FF line.
I was putting Paudie there as he can win the odd ball. David Breens stats for his last 10 games are puckouts contested 105, puckouts won 0. FACT
Lynch is the play maker to play further out. No one on the team has the vision he has. Dowling and Gavin are the only ones that come close. Maybe Fitz. The rest of our forwards like Mulcahy and Downes have a first instinct to go forward and shoot. Then we have a rake of players who may as well be playing with a pair of blinkers on the sides of their helmets.
Mulcahy is a super player but different to OāDonnell and no, he is not better. He is more comparable to McGrath, but he has never really cut loose and done damage to same extent. I know which one Iād want on the end of a goal chance. Granted Mulcahy doesnāt get the same service of ball, but still.
In addition, he doesnāt have the perfect first touch of McGrath or OāDonnell, often fails to take it up first time. He also tends to try to offload blind when bottled up in situations where OāDonnell or McGrath would win a free. Iād like to see Mulcahy take on his man the way those two do more often and go for goal or engineer a free.
Dowling similar vision to Lynch? Your having a laugh.
Read it again you pillock.
Is it 2016 yet?
Mulcahy, Hickey and Gavin need to be chopped. Not up to it.
Teeges days are nigh. As is the next Limerick Gaa scandal.
