Shane Longâs wasnât a trial, he was actually bought by Reading from Cork City as part of the Kevin Doyle transfer
Spot on.
Did Long actually have trails in the UK before joining Cork City from St Michaels?
6 strong well ran clubs might not be too bad if they were strong, well ran and providing players for the county squads.
GAA is strong in the Kerry towns of Tralee and Killarney when you think of it
In Tralee urban region, Austin Stacks, Kerins OâRahillys, John Mitchels and Na Gaeil have active vibrant clubs. The parishes outside the town have their own clubs. In Killarney, Dr Crokes and Legion are strong. Spa, Kilcummin and Fossa pick from the outskirts of the town and surrounding rural areas.
The Crescent Comp is a complete wasteland for GAA in the city which is a real pity. Big school and there would be a lot of students there from places like Adare, Patrickswell and Croom which would be GAA areas first and foremost.
Unfortunately it has always been about rugby football in there and winning two of those Munster Senior Cups in recent years means that it wonât change any time soon. For a school of itâs size they should be capable of having competitive GAA teams. The likes of Doon CBS put it to shame.
Crescent Comp are not promoting our national games yet the media say nothing about it. There is students there from hurling areas such as South Liberties, Crecora, Patrickswell, Mungret ,adare and Croom. If the shoe was on the other foot and a Limerick College had a ban on the playing of soccer and rugby, Len Dineen and Joe Nash would probably have a show on Thugby FM about it.
I asked a teacher in the Crescent about this a few years ago when I was doing some work there. It struck me as very bizarre that youâd go out of your way to stop any particular sport being played in a school. She said it was due to student welfare as playing two sports can lead to burnout and physical exhaustion. Now that sounded like bull then and it sounds like bull now. Can anyone tell me what the official reason for the rugby only policy there (Iâm assuming they donât play soccer there either?)
Schools like Castletroy and Ard Scoil are well able to produce good hurling and rugby teams in the same year without killing any students in the process.
Edit: It seems Crescent have a soccer team so it makes the absence of GAA all the more puzzling.

Not sure, I was actually told before that Kieran Bergin was every bit as good a soccer player as Shane Long growing up but Iâm not sure how true that is

I remember a few years ago that Gerry Bennis was bemoaning the lack of co operation from Crescent when the GAA tried to establish teams there. Ironically, Gary Kirby went there. The anti GAA bias there severely hampers Mungret GAA club. The Jesuits were always West Brits so it really is no surprise but they should be shamed into providing our national games to their students.
Two decent minor players were with the Crescent about two years ago, Dee and Murphy I think. They played with Mungret and not with the school. They both played rugby with the Crescent as well and one of them is in the Munster development squad I think.
There is a girls underage football team in the school. Strange situation.
Just back from Mick Neville Park.
Senior football championship result. Ballysteen 3-14 Adare 0-06.
Beautiful night for football. First half was fairly mundane, Ballysteen led 0-06 to 0-01 at the break. All bar one of the scores came from frees.
A quickfire 1-02 at the start of the second half killed the game off. The last 20 minutes was a procession. Adare were very, very poor. Ballysteen could have bagged a few more goals. Miles the better side.
The double came in as ncw beat kierans by a point.
Thanks runt.
Our crew beat bruff in a good game 1-13 to 2-9 after being 8 down at ht. However oola did not show up v cappamore and lost by 10 so we are out.
St pats had a good win, beating monaleen 3-8 to 0-12, great result for them.

How was the lad in goals and the small fella corner back?
The diminutive corner back was probably MOTM. Out in front every time, cultured left foot and intelligent distribution.
'Keeper made a few decent saves.
Adare looked like a team that just wanted to head back to Lenaâs for pints.

do adare give a damn about big ball?
They got to the county final in football a few years ago I think. But hurling is king. Like most predominantly hurling clubs in the county there would be elements within it who would happily see the football team disbanded.
Theyâve done well in recent years to be a dual senior club.
