Liverpool 2008/09

Its a big 5 now?!

Yer man Babel had a chance to grasp a first team spot yesterday and was terribly poor too. They lacked imagination out wide what with Kuyt gamely plugging away over on the other side but delivering little. If Torres goes off on a goalscoring run then they’ll still have a shot at the title but I don’t see them being much of a factor as things stand. They’re like Arsenal last season - except Arsenal lasted until late March.

yeah to be fair Arsenal are still a threat on their day

I see Benitez has come out and given his full backing to Robbie Keane, thats him fucked then.

Reports this morning linking Lennon or Jenas plus cash for Keane.

Would definitely take Lennon.

Seriously? Wouldn’t have thought he was good enough to make a difference. He could become a squad winger alright but Liverpool have had buckets of those in recent years - it’s real quality like Quaresma/McGeady/Ronaldo/Ribery or something that they’ve been missing.

Keane is a dead duck at the moment I feel. Also if he goes back to Spurs then much of the 20 million would not become payable (sounding like a real accountant here).

Been impressed anytime I have seen Lennon. He may not be top class but he is better than anyone we have there at the moment.

Is it just me or is Ribery overrated? Granted I haven’t seen much of him for Bayern but anytime I have seen him, while he looks decent, I don’t think he is up there with the likes of Messi, Ronaldo et al.

Also nowhere near the same class as Zidane was.

yeah Ribery is fairly shit alright. Isnt a patch on 3 of the best players in the world over the past couple of seasons.

Keane is at nothing, and it was the most pointless purchase ever. Buying a player who plays in the very same role as the team captain and all round cult hero is a bit of a waste. Lennon isnt the answer either. as good and all as he is and tricks and all that jazz, is he much better than pennant?

To be honest there aren’t many who are in the same class as Zidane and Messi. I guess it depends on how highly you think Ribery is rated as to whether you consider him overrated or not.

I’ve seen him plenty of times for Bayern and what’s obvious is that they are nothing without him. They’ve some lovely players and when they click they look great and guys like Toni look unplayable. But when Ribery is absent the whole team looks ordinary and pedestrian.

He’s a cracking player. And he’s one of those players who’s an absolute joy to watch. If you’re ranking him against other wingers then he’s streets ahead of the likes of Nasri, Riera, Nani, Young etc. Ronaldo is probably better but they’re different sorts of players. Ribery is a better fit for a side like Liverpool that want their wingers to be creating chances.

A good question - always thought he had more to his game than Pennant.

The signing of Keane made no sense. I feel sorry for him I must say. I have no doubt that he is an excellent player but is too in awe of Torres and Gerrard to have any meaningful impact.

Quaresma was the signing to make last summer. He is an actual winger. Left or right. Then Gerrard off Torres.

Christ - that is not saying much.

Would definitely provide some badly needed pace down the flanks. If he settled early would be a good signing. Also what would be in Lennon’s favour is that his poor crossing would not be as evident at Liverpool. Torres or Gerrard arent that great with the head so low crosses would be fine. There could be movement in this story yet particularly if Arry throws in Corluka, Bale or Jenas into the mix aswell.

Incidentially a Robbie Keane and Defoe partnership was proven not to work countless times when they were together at Spurs

Well do you really think that Lennon is better than that list? Because his record suggests he’s not. They’re really the only genuine wingers at big 5  clubs England that came to mind. You could add Milner, Downing etc. etc. so that’s your EPL comparison. And as I said he’s streets ahead of them.

What you need to realise is that you’re talking about Liverpool here. You think that saying Lennon has “more to his game than Pennant” means he should be signed. Yet Ribery being “streets ahead of … Riera” is not saying much!

You don’t understand English do you?

Hang on - don’t be getting on your high horse.

I never said Lennon was world class. In fact I said that he was better than what Liverpool had there at the moment.

You mentioned him not being good enough and said that the likes of Ribery is as good as there is out there.

I asked if he really was that good and you then gave a list of average players who you said he was better than. I said that didn’t say much as it didn’t frankly.

I thought you were taking the piss farmer comparing Ribery to Messi, Ronaldo and Zidane. Fecking hell, if Liverpool were to buy players of that quality then its a no brainer, but I dont think anyone ever tryed compare Ribery to them. Think rocko was saying its someone like Ribery pool need. Not necessarily him, but players of his quality, and there is no doubt in my mind, he is far better than the likes of Lennon, Pennant et al, all these English wingers who do well for a smaller side and then are made out out be the next big things. And it is someone like Ribery/Quaresma and that ilk that pool need. No point spending 5-10m on another half arsed winger who isnt up to scratch in the big games. Ribery obviously isnt the best player in the world, but he would be a big addition to Liverpool.

I didn’t say Ribery is as good as there is out there. I said he was real quality and you got on that big old high horse of yours and said he’s not as good as Zidane or Messi. A ridiculous comparison. You can compare any player in the world today to Zidane or Messi and say they’re not in the same class. That doesn’t mean they’re overrated.

Show me someone who says that Ribery is as good as Messi or Zidane and I’ll agree with you that he’s overrated. The truth is he’s an excellent footballer, better than Quaresma, and easily better than any other winger at Liverpool. In that context he’s the sort of quality that would make a real difference to Liverpool. Far more than Lennon would.

Any queries let me know.

May Rock was doing that but he put Ribery in the same sentence as Ronaldo and McGeady which shows he obviously rates him very highly.

I questioned how good he was and he said he was better than Nani!

Ok - he probably meant that he was better than what is there at Liverpool at the moment which is fair enough.

But there seems to be a view out there that he is one of the world’s top players and that is what I was getting at when I asked how good he was really.

No none.

It’s perfectly clear.

Phew, presumed your initial answer was tongue in cheek but began to doubt myself. Thought I’d have to add you to my list of crazy posters.

Thats a big list I’d say.
