Weren’t they cousins too? Le Tallec randomly started that 2-1 win over Juve in the quarter-finals of our 2005 Champions League winning season. Always thought Pongolle was decent and just never got the chances. Was productive enough for Atletico Madrid a few years after leaving Liverpool.

That’s the game, Fowler in his prime.

Both Fowler and Owen were mismanaged on injuries and Fowler re his role in the team in his latter years.

Fowler was very gifted technically as exemplified by the goals there and a less risk averse coach would’ve redeployed him playing just off Owen after his cruciate. He was never the same physically after the cruciate and while part of that is on him, he was the kind of player that needed to feel wanted. I’d say he’d have loved to have gotten himself right for Keegan at City but he was way off his physical prime then and hadn’t lived the life.

Heskey could’ve rolled in as well to lead the line as it is well acknowledged that Owen was overplayed given his hamstring issues. Jari Litmanen could’ve played with any of them really he was that good. The likes of Barnby, Owen and Heskey were willing runners to balance Fowler in his latter time at Liverpool.

Houllier was a great man to get a team working hard and in the right shape, was a top coach but he seemed to have a distrust of technical or mercurial players and wingers.

Ginola was responsible for that. Fuckacting in the 90th minute of a World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria cost Houlliers France a place in the 1994 World Cup.

It was awful sad what happened to Babbel in 2001. He came back to play again elsewhere though didn’t he? Great character as B Rod would say. The Babbel illness and Carragher usurping Henchoz ushered in the arrivals of Finnan and Riise. I always had a real fondness for John Arne Riise. A scorer of great goals.
