Liverpool Football Club 2013/14

Mourinho’s win first strategy is really quite disappointing.

Probably why he doesn’t ever use it.
My Response to your thoughts.

 1. Correct.

 2. You got a bit from the ref as well. Should have been a peno for handball at the end of the first half. Trying to stop Liverpool’s early momentum was a pretty important part of the tactics. Inexplicable has a p although it can sound like a b when said.

 3. So Gerrard was deep, behind Lucas and Allen? Sounds silly seen as Liverpool had most of the possession and Chelsea were sitting very deep.

 4. Correct. I would say gamesmanship rather than showmanship but we won’t split hairs.

 5. They deserved to win. Your agument seems to be that if you take away their goals, they had nothing (you neglect to mention Schurrle’s shot low that was well saved) but they had a system that was set up to nullify Liverpool and beat them. You even outline it in point 4. ‘Ba was the outlet all the time and is a handful but they also had Salah and Schurrle breaking forward to support. I think it was more a case that Liverpool had little options in attack.’

 6. Incorrect. The defense was poor. One of your players(the last man) failed to control the ball and then jumped on the ground. In the second half Chelsea had better situations every time they countered, but were possibly hampered by the absence of some of their best breaking attackers in Hazard, Oscar, Eto and Willian until he came on.

 7. I do too, and it sits with me as the lesser of three evils, weirdly.
Two points:

 • Yes Gerrard was deeper than Lucas and Allen. @ClarkeyCat called for Lucas to be dropped back at half time to bring Gerrard more forward. I said that Rodgers will not do that as all his talk seems to be that he has found the ideal position for Gerrard. What was apparent is that Lucas was more or less a dead duck as a result as he does not possess any other qualities than be a screener.

 • So is the only thing you have on Liverpol being defensively poor is the Gerrard slip? I think that is what you are getting at.

You could pick out any freak result and that certainly was one.

What about the UEFA Cup semi final second leg against Barcelona in the Nou Camp? Delayed by 15 minutes to find out who shot Phil Mitchell.

Who was it?
You know right well that the point is that Chelsea and his last club are the two richest clubs in the world, with the ability to outbid anybody for any player, yet he continues to produce appalling football, and seriously, it is fucking appalling stuff.

Mourinho is a cunt and always has been-that shouldn’t be news to anybody supporting Liverpool. He did what he had to do to win yesterday-awful to watch but again that’s nothing new. Hopefully Liverpool will still win the league because they’ve been the best team (to watch) since Christmas and you’d hate to see Chelsea being rewarded for playing like that but lads losing their lives over Mourinho setting them up defensively and being a cunt is a bit much. He was never going to do anything else.

His ex girlfriend, the small curly haired one what done it

No I think that Chelsea didn’t attack very much as the wanted to play on the break but that considering the numbers advantage Liverpool had back there they looked shaky when Chelsea did break. Schurrle in particular looked like he would cause damage at will. Over the season we’ve seen that Liverpool’s defending can be quite poor and we saw it again yesterday. It was in marked contrast to Chelsea who looked unflustered while constantly dealing with pressure.

Apologies if that wasn’t clear enough because I was having a pop at Stevie Me.

Yes I am.

Lisa

I thought she shot Mr. Burns?

Oh wait, that was Maggie.

Schurrle?

As you pointed out he had one shot which was well saved. I don’t recall him doing anything else at all apart from a woeful touch in the first half when it looked like a promising Chelsea break.

I never said that Liverpool were great all season defensively but I thought they did ok yesterday.

Stevie Me

I seem to recall thinking that she would get it.
Suarez had a shot towards the end more or less straight at Schwartzer who pushed it over.

Joe Allen also had a shot in the second half which Schwartzer saved.

Yeah - full back could have done better I suppose in terms of cutting out the space. But neither are necessarily good in the air. I think it is unfair to say that Ba bullied Skrtel and Sakho. He is very good in the air and very strong so in that sense he was bullying them but I thought they both held up well apart from maybe one instance with Sakho in the second half.

I’d agree on Gerrard. Good in the first half but maybe too impatient in the second but I could understand his frustration. I got a text off a mate last night giving out about Gerrard and how he was less interested in Liverpool winning and just tried to be a hero. Utter bullshit.
That Suarez shot wasn’t a better chance than the one that fell to Kalas. And as @Juhniallio subsequently pointed out - the Schurrle shot was as close as anyone came to scoring. I don’t think Liverpool dominated in chances or anything like it. Chelsea were very close to scoring on the break a few times, awful passing and pass selection from Ba let them down.

On the full backs, I don’t think you need to be great in the air to prevent Ba from taking a ball into his feet or onto his chest. A simple one in front and one behind tactic would have disrupted Ba’s possession. They were extremely reluctant to even stand in the same area as the ball. It was an odd tactic to surrender so completely. Even still, I would have expected more from my centre backs.

She was no Stacey Slater.

I think by the second half that was more apparent but that was after Chelsea took the lead. In the first half you could see Chelsea actually pressing Gerrard when he got on the ball and forcing Liverpool to play out through Skrtel and Sakho. Lampard seemed to be given the task of not allowing Gerrard time on the ball and it was inevitable Gerrard would drop deep as a result.

Sakho had a great chance first half unmarked 6 yards out— Fell to the wrong guy.

Looking at the second half yesterday, it was clear his performance was detrimental to the liverpool cause.

I agree with a lot of @farmerinthecity 's points except for the Liverpool centre back / Ba bit. I thought he gave them a really rough time and won pretty much everything that went up to him with fuck all support. Schurrle and Salah/Willian* obviously had licence to join in but they were usually coming from very, very deep. Was it Ba who drilled the ball off some other Chelsea player’s ass when they had a break on at 1-0? I found that amusing.

 • or Williams as my auld lad calls him. He genuinely thinks that’s his name and he thinks this Williams is a great player.

You’re dead right, Sid. It makes me turn off a match usually these days. I managed to watch yesterday but it’s fucking horrible.
