Liverpool Football Club 2022/23

Strange, delusional people.

And a bag of yokes.

It should be said however that the dates favour a possible unlikely Liverpool European Cup win this year.

Liverpool winning particular competitions tends to follow distinct patterns.

In the league, we’ve a far better record in seasons ending in even years than in seasons ending in odd years. Our last five league titles have come in even years - 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990 and 2020.

In the FA Cup, we tend to win in years in which Leinster plays Munster and Ulster plays Connacht in the All-Ireland football semi-finals. 7 of our 8 FA Cup wins have come in such years - 1965, 1974, 1986, 1989, 1992, 2001 and 2022. The only exception is 2006 when the set draw was Leinster v Connacht and Munster v Ulster in the All-Ireland football semi-finals.

In the very prestigious League Cup we tend to do well in the first half of a decade - eight of our nine titles have come in the first halves of decades (1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 2001, 2003, 2012 and 2022). The only exception to this is 1995, and April 2nd of that year was barely over the halfway point of the 1990s.

We lost League Cup finals in 1978, 1987, 2005 and 2016 but have never lost a final in the first half of a decade.

In the European Cup, we have a good record in odd years (four of our 6 titles have been in odd years - 1977, 1981, 2005 and 2019) and in years in which the set draw for the All-Ireland football semi-finals is Leinster v Ulster/Munster v Connacht - again four of our six titles have come in such years - 1978, 1981, 1984 and 2005.

This year is an odd year (which favours us) and a Leinster v Ulster/Munster v Connacht year (which favours us). The final venue (Istanbul) favours us and the previous time we lost a final before 2022 (2018) we came back the following year to win Old Big Ears. Four of our six titles have come in years in which we did not win the league (1978, 1981, 2005, 2019) and by christ we won’t be winning the league this year. We’ve never lost a European Cup final in a Leinster v Ulster/Munster v Connacht All-Ireland football semi-finals year.

Another good omen is that all of Liverpool’s six titles have come in years which end in different numbers - 1 (1981), 4 (1984), 5 (2005), 7 (1977), 8 (1978) and 9 (2019). We haven’t yet won in a year ending in 3 but I think that suits us. History is there be made.

I use similar rationale when telling myself ill win the lotto. It’s great.

Ken Barlow and Deidre getting married in Corrie and a royal wedding would really add to the sense of history repeating itself.

Start practicing pal…

The it’s lucky for Manchester United when the year ends in 3 rationale appears to be producing the goods.

This is not hocus pocus, this is science.

The late, great Arthur Murphy (not of Mailbag) pointed out to me in the Bohemian pub in 1990 that Cork had won the All-Ireland senior double in 1890, and that the scientific omens pointed to a Cork double in 1990. He was correct. In June 1991 he pointed out that Spurs had already won the FA Cup that year. Using a combination of exceptional GAA knowledge and a scientific knowledge of dates and patterns, he pointed out that things which had happened in 1961 were once again happening in 1991 and that Tipperary and Down would win the senior All-Irelands that year. He was correct. In August 1993 after Derry had beaten Dublin he pointed out to me that teams which had won games in the senior football championship on a scoreline of 0-8 to 0-6 had a history of going on to win the All-Ireland. Derry had beaten Donegal 0-8 to 0-6 in the Ulster final that year and Derry duly went on to win the All-Ireland. This scientific framework also held for Dublin in 2011 when they beat Donegal by 0-8 to 0-6.

Hopefully he sees out his contract to 2026 anyway.

The last three Popes to die before Pope Benedict XVI died in 1978, 1978 and 2005. Liverpool won the European Cup in each of these years.

Pope Benedict XVI died at 09:34 CET (UTC+1) on December 31st, 2022. That was 1 hour and 26 minutes before it became 2023 in the furthest easterly time zone, which would have extended the sequence. I never liked the cunt anyway.

If we fail to win Old Big Ears this year, that could be the difference. The margins in top level sport are tiny.

Are you 10?

The science was clear. Argentina were destined to win the 2022 World Cup. Trust the science.

They only have deadwood now as far as I can see.

We also have The Shield (won at Leicester’s King Power Stadium last July) and things have been very much Breaking Bad for us this season with our title hopes Six Feet Under.

Liverpool need to appoint Steven Gerrard.

Brilliant :clap::clap::rofl:

Even I had a chuckle at this
