I see in The Irish Times that a soldier in Louth received correspondence stating he was liable to pay the tax on an army barracks in Dublin.
I myself received a letter pinning me for the tax on the apartment I rent. I have sent them a “strongly worded letter” in response as the owner is liable, rather than me. Their letter was along the lines of our “our records show that you are liable…” What records are they? I claim rent relief on the property via the Revenue and I don’t know what other records they’d have used to reach their conclusion.

Any other queries on this matter?[/quote]
“Rather than I” not “rather than me.”
Don’t tell anybody but I used to live elsewhere in my electoral region in Dublin and still use that address to vote. Fuck, I’ve probably a letter for me at that address too now I think about it. But I thought the rent relief bit would make them twig that I’m a tenant rather than an owner. Do they have access to utility bills and stuff like TV licences?
Best to simply call them and tell them the story with regards your current abode. I would imagine the revenue take any details they have and adopt a scattergun approach thereafter, so regardless of rent relief or however they have details, they’ll just have fired out letters to anyone on their system. However some civil servant type here may be better informed.
The bottom line is, you rent, you’re not eligible, call them, tell them. That way any other random letters addressed to your fine name (without the e) doing the rounds can be disregarded.

Yeah, they included a booklet with the letter to cover off the FAQs. It advises you to write them a letter if you feel you’re not eligible, which I have done so. It then says they will assess your correspondence and make a decision! If you simply don’t respond and ignore it because it shouldn’t apply to you then you can be made pay it, even if by the definitions you’re not required to pay. In other words, if a dickhead in Revenue has incorrectly nailed you for it then it’s up to you to go and chase them up to get things cleared up.
I sorted out the Property Tax for my Ma at home. They were valuing the house at much more than its true value. We only had it valued a couple of months ago for another reason. I looked at that table in the booklet and paid the amount equivalent to the true value and let them go and fuck.
Yea, just tossing it aside and thinking its nothing to do with me is pretty much the worst thing you could do with regards this thing. Considering some of the fellas working in the Civil Service I’m impressed they’ve managed to post the envelopes in the first place.
Just trying to help mate. No point in lying on your declaration as allegedly revenue are hiring a load of Google earth analysts to clamp down on fraudsters.
