From my limited knowledge on the subject, I believe the vote became a vote against the govt and wording of the referendum rather than voting for a republic. I think months before they thought it would be passed easily but the no camp stirred up some shit and the yes camp fell out among themselves and the wording of the referendum. Throw in the general feeling that some states oppose almost everything federal and the message to get rid of the royals got lost in the middle. Some amount of people here are English or at least 2nd or 3rd generation. They used give out 1 pound flights from England back in the 70s to make the population more white.
