Remember the stick McCarthy got for not starting Stumpy. Even Spock has jettisoned him at this stage.
sounds like a load of lads want Kenny ridiculed and publicly hung drawn and quartered for attempting to get Ireland to play football on the deck.
He is changing an entire culture of play style with a hell of a lot of new players.
Burn him
Agree with all that. The last 10 minutes last night have put a nice spin on things.
Weāre trying to do things right but we are a long way from the finished product. We were poor enough for most of last night and throughout the campaign. Ok, it takes time to change things up but weāre dealing with professional footballers here ffs, lads who are largely playing ball on the ground with clubs every day. The truth as you say is somewhere in the middleā¦ The reason other managers played a more direct game was because we didnāt have the players where it counts to control a game and thatās still largely the case. Any team that applied a decent press against us this term troubled usā¦ the middle of the park is still a big worry. Flooding the channels is great and Idah and Ogbene are welcome additions and very game but the better sides will negate that and ask us to play through them. Getting back to front quickly will always suit us and thereās fuck all wrong with itā¦ But thereās nothing wrong with a bit of football either says you. We need a bit more guile before we announce ourselves as the next Spain.
nope, its the one point out of 6 against luxembourg & azerbijan at home which is the issue
Kenny has always been pragmatic though, his Dundalk team consistently went up against better teams in Europe and over achieved, because they were fucking tough to break down and they played to their strengths, and they werenāt afraid to keep the ball when they needed to, if he identified a slow defender, he was targetted with quick diagonals, like in Portugal or with Ogbenne in Dublin against Portugal, he had Ogbenne running in to out after pulling everyone else away and hit him with a load of direct balls.
how was he pragmatic at Dunfermline or Rovers?
Ah now, all we did for years was get the centre halves to launch balls long for 90 odd minutes when the slightest bit of pressure came on them now even Duffy is looking to keep it on the deck and play our way out from the back when possible. Nothing wrong with mixing in the odd long hoof but 50+ times a game is horrific. Kenny has the right idea the team age profile now is perfect to have them adjusted to a style of competent, basic passing at this level, like all things there was and will continue to be growing pains but the early shooting of buds are beginning to poke through.
I donāt think that is the case and I understand that there is learning on the job that Kenny is doing and that there is a lot of goodwill for him from the football journalists which is fair enough.
I do think he has gotten a soft enough ride for those reasons. The offtheball sunday paper review the weekend of any international weekend used to pretty much be the OTB crew and football journalists lining up to find faults with Trapās team selections and methods. Even go back and read some of the threads on here to get a feel from some posters who used to constantly harp on the negative about his time even when things were going well, it was the prevailing attitude towards him. Kenny has very much gotten the other end of the stick since he got the gig.
Trap was very much hampered like very other Ireland manager in the last 15 years in the fact that we do not have a central midfielder who can get on the ball under pressure and recycle it.
Thatās absurd revisionism.
They had good games under McCarthy/Trap/MON too where they played a bit.
The worst football Iāve ever seen from and Irish team has been under Kenny, he brought Ireland to new lows. Things have improved since but only reverted to the level before he took charge.
Iām not anti Spockā¦ I hope it works out. Iām just stating the obvious really. I hope the recent run of results spur the team on and builds confidence but a disinterested Portugal and a very ordinary Luxembourgā¦
The signs are optimistic but heās had his honeymoon period and the team now need to deliver. A big ask still.
Why do you keep ignoring the fact that Trap and MON had far better players with more experience at their disposal? Iām not knocking those managers either we had some great results as well as horrific ones but that is sport.
Why do you keep ignoring the fact that Trap and MON had far better players with more experience at their disposal?
I donāt, I think itās debatable too. Keogh, Ward, Whelan, McClean, Andrews? Great players?
Why do you keep ignoring the fact Trap and OāNeill had some brilliant results when it really mattered and actually qualified for major tournaments and didnāt have themselves out of qualification picture after the first three games?
ah sure you can downplay any positive and magnify all the negatives. weāve never scored a goal like Ogbenneās against anyone, not to mind away in a competitive fixture.
The last time we won by 3 or more goals away from home in a competitive fixture was away to Gibraltar in 2015. Weāve just done it twice in a month there against teams much better than Gibraltar.
Weāve taken some absolute hidings under the previous managers tooā¦ not so with Kenny. Weāve generally been solid apart from some horrendous performances early on when the players didnāt look like they knew what they were doing when countered, that seems fixed now.
Itās very positive for Irish soccer where it is now.
ah sure you can downplay any positive and magnify all the negatives.
As the Irish press did with McCarthy, OāNeill and Trap
Or you can magnify any positive and downplay any negative as the Irish press do with Kenny.
Bascially Kenny has brought Ireland from to the their lowest point
Weāre currently 50th in the world in FIFA Ranking.
Under Trapattoni we fell to 67th in the world.
Under Trapattoni we fell to 67th in the world.
I think the rankings are a cod and pre nations league were largely scored by friendlies.
I think from a results perspective Kenny brought Ireland to the lowest point I can remember.
Kenny needs to come out and tell us what he thinks about Paul Scholes and then we can judge him.
youāve taken that amazingly personally, let it go bud
Itās like youāve stood on his toes ā¦
I let it go the other night after 4/5 posts mate. You went after it for 24hrs. The above is whats known as a joke.
