The parents of lad I went to school with (same chap who regaled me with his exploits in New Zealand which i posted in the Roaster thread over christmas) used to go on exotic foreign holidays every year and leave the three kids at home. Mother was a teacher and father had a small business and had decent means yet they still live below in a Fr Harry Bohan house and never once took the kids away yet would go off to South Africa, Sri Lanka etc in the late 80s and 90s while the kids were being reared by the neighbours a lot of the time.
First time the chap left the country was when he went on a lads holiday with a gang of us when he was 19. Sad really, a lot of baggage in that household unfortunately.
On a slightly related topic, did anyone watch the documentary “The Imposter” it was on channel 4 last week. Utterly bizarre stuff, the human mind is a very powerful and complex thing.
That’s hilarious, my running joke having a laugh at fellas taking pictures of pints has really upset you that much??
And for you it defines me as a poster
Sounds like there’s a bit more going on there … but it seems to have been a thing with people who had means — headed off on hols and left very young children behind with strangers. I know a lot of places may not have been kid/family orientated back then - but it just seems mind blowing to leave a 9 month old baby with strangers for two weeks while you holiday. That’s what happened in Mrs O’Sullivans case - now she knew the parents of most of them, but didnt know them know them … and they just handed over their 7/8/9/10 month old baby and fucked off atin and drinking for 2 weeks…
When you think back to when you were young… I think every parent lost their kid at supermarket or shopping centre at some time… Or lads getting put in the boot of the car going to football matches… Imagine a car had rear ended them.
The McCanns took a calculated gamble on the welfare of their kids to devastating consequences, it is/was child neglect. The McCanns knew what they were doing was wrong and dangerous before they did it but did it anyway. They might never have foreseen the consequences but that is no excuse. A lad who hops behind a wheel drunk probably never imagines he’s going to mow somebody down. What they did is every bit and probably worse than any drink driver.
I can’t believe some people are equating it to parents who might get unwittingly distracted for 10-15 minutes while in the care of their children. It’s crazy stuff.
Yeah there is a back story alright hence why a couple of the neighbours never objected to minding the kids and even then I only know the high level stuff, like every family god only knows what happens behind closed doors.
I got lost at a Munster Football Final below in Killarney. Had to go to the jacks and the father wasn’t leaving the good seats he had got to accompany me.
