A previous collective bargaining agreement had expired and the players union and owners couldn’t agree on a new one over a bunch of individually small stuff and it escalated from there.
With covid not going away and war in Europe, there’s no tolerance for a millionaire/billionaire squabble so an agreement was cobbled together pretty quickly.
