Managerial Merrygoround Thread

McClaren to Forest has been confirmed. I dont believe he’ll be a bad appointment for them, for what its worth. Man gets a raw deal but he’s got a decent CV all the same and at least had the balls to test himself abroad unlike most those euro sceptics in the EPL et al.

I don’t think he’s a bad appointment either - he’s certainly good enough for a club like Forest and he’s ambitious and driven anyway. I think they were hasty in sacking Davies anyway, ignoring the fact I can’t stand the guy. Why is failure in the playoffs suddenly not good enough for Forest?

They have won one less European Cup than Man Utd.

That is particularly irrelevant in assessing the performance of Billy Davies as manager.

I know. I just wanted to point out the fact that Man Utd have only won one more European Cup than Nottingham Forest.

Not getting promoted when Hull, Blackpool, Swansea have gone up wouldnt be great. Davies had a solid enough record but no harm in Forest wanting to do better.

McClaren will do well there I reckon. Id have given him a chance at Villa to be honest. Davies was a spiteful little prick and Forest always went to pot under him late in the season.

On the Villa job, seems to me as if it were a PR stunt by Dave Whelan re Martinez and Villa. My own take is that Martinez was one of many asked for a chat, wasnt a preferred candidate and unlikely to get the gig anyway. Whelan played it out as a masterstroke that a club with an average attendance of a GAA county final and that share their ground with a rugby league team held more of an attraction for Martinez that former European Cup winners who in Jan spent 18m on a striker. That doesnt make any sense. Villa never offered Martinez the job so hard to know how he turned Villa down. Think we have swerved a bullet there regardless anyway. The McLeish stories are surely bullshit, we already appointed a manager based on a SPL record, cant see that happening again especially since he took down the local rivals twice. If the board were to appoint him, they could count on 10k less season ticket holders next season. Relegation this season has really haunted his CV. It wont be McLeish.

Not sure what happened the Benitez link. Hughes is still waiting around. Moyes, Coyle could still be tempted I reckon. Hopefully someone out of left field could emerge - Steve Staunton or Mark Kinsella maybe.

In Villa related news, Savo Milosevic, scorer of a brilliant goal against Leeds in the 1996 coca cola cup final had a bad weekend. His grandfather killed his father.

Ashley Young called off his wedding at the last minute too. Saw a pic of his mot. I can see why. Former Villa great and Young’s best mate Liam Ridgewell also cancelled his wedding at the weekend. Havent seen his bird but my sources in Bham tell me Young has been giving her a good seeing to for sometime.

I prefers TASE’s explanation.

which was?

Everton are going having a press conference today at 2pm apparently. To tell Villa to fuck off I presume.

That the two boys are happy.

Moyes will not be leaving Everton. Wonder did he just make a scene to try and get some funds. Not so sure staying at Everton at this point would be a good career move for him.

But Billy Davies wasn’t even at Forest when Hull got promoted. He finished higher than them this season.

Some PR stunt from Wigan alright. Villa just wanted a chat! Of course they did. Sure what else would they be doing with their spare time in the summer other than having a chat with chairmen to make sure they could then have a chat to managers, not that they were really interested of course.

So this McLeish to Villa thing looks legit at this point. Thats gotta be seen as a bizarre appointment surely? Never really had any opinion on McLeish up to this point, am sure there’s others on here that would have better familiarity with him. I guess him winning the League Cup is something thats drawn Villa to him given their pedigree in that competition.

The interest is real anyway but remains to be seen whether they’ll be put off by Birmingham playing legal hard ball.

He’s a very average manager at best. His record in the SPL was decent but disguised some serious shortcomings and most Rangers fans were delighted to see the back of him. Not dissimilar to Strachan in that respect I suppose.

I’m hoping beyond hope (Ive also laid him on BF like Martinez) that this is a smokescreen for someone else to come in. He is still around evs on BF which leads me to hope that all is not yet anywhere close to being signed and sealed.

I made this point elsewhere today but if McClaren could be ruled out for supporter opposition and Hughes not find favour with the board because of the way he walked out on Fulham, it really beggars belief how McLeish, who took down the hated city rivals Bham twice and left the same club after they stuck by him twice after relegation, could even be considered. Throw in the Bham board were over in Holland trying to buy a player for him at the time of his email to quit, they also had bought jailbird Marlon King a week earlier. Martinez with a league one promotion and two seasons of keeping Wigan up by the skin of their teeth was asked for a chat though so you couldnt be 100% sure.

There is no other job in the EPL that I think McLeish would be considered for. Under any criteria he shouldnt be anywhere near the Villa job. The supporters will go ballistic over this due to the Bham connection alone. His record makes Steve Bruce look like Mourinho. Attendances would drop for sure and his archaic style of play will turn people off further. I think this relegation has interminally damaged his CV, if he had kept them up handy as he should have done then he might have been an option for somewhere else. two bad results in a row for him at Villa and the crowd will be waiting to get on his back. Dont think there is anyway he could succeed at Villa. Which is why I think it cant happen.

One thing that worries me is Lerner’s record at the Cleveland Browns where by all accounts he has made disastrous managerial decisions in the past.

Benitez is a no brainer for the Villa job

Interminally? A perfectly cromulent word.

I’d have to agree with most of that though. I can’t see how or why McLeish is being seriously considered. There’s no doubt he’s on the agenda now but you’d have to imagine that the negative aspects of Hughes and McClaren are multiplied in McLeish.

Ruud Gullit has been sacked as Terek Grozny manager. Wouldn’t fancy working in Chechnya myself. They gave him an ultimatum before this evening’s league game and said he would be fired if they didn’t win. They lost to a last minute own goal and they moved quickly to sack him citing that he had more interest in partying.

Any idea why that is currently the third headline on the BBC News website? Seems bizarre. It’s barely interesting as sports news, never mind actual news.

Not really sure but it’s probably because of his time spent playing and managing in England. Although there could be the Chechnya angle and how the government and/or military get involved in the club. I read an article a while back about Gullit’s time at Terek Grozny and it was interesting. So there.

I see Alan Shearer is being touted as a potential Cardiff manager.

Aston Villa have just released a statement declaring their intention to speak with McLeish.
