I could see Big Mick taking a few of his Wolves players too as they look to offload their high earners. The AVFC starting XI next season could look like
Looking like Villa are getting down to business. Randy has flown to Norway.
You are my Solskjaer my Ole Solskjaer,
You make me happy when skies are grey,
Oh Alan Shearer was F***ing dearer,
So Please don’t take my Solskjaer away.
This would be a bizarre appointment by Villa. Equivalent of appointing whoever managed the Airtricity League or Icelandic league champions last season.
Good quip, I grant you, but there is a huge difference to Martin O’Neill’s track record* and what Solskjaer has achieved and UEFA rate Scotland’s a fair bit higher than Norway.
groundwork in England, wresting control from the financially doping huns in Scotland, progression in Europe and to a UEFA Cup final.
I would be much happier with Solskjaer than any of Mick, Bruce, Curbs etc.
I would rather we tried with a manager that could possibly end up being very good (could just as easily flop) rather than any of the managers who will at best be mediocre.
I agree then again after Houllier and McLeish, he couldnt be any worse really.
MON, Houllier, McLeish had similar enough records before they came to Villa. League Cup successes in England, Uefa cup runs etc. I was excited about MON at the time but there would have been very few Villa fans excited about Houllier and McLeish. Often those with the strongest CV’s are those without the drive to improve themselves. Yesterday’s men.
Just from reading the Villa forums, there is a pretty positive response. Looks like he will sign up today which is good too. A new man in place straight away so we can get cracking into a massive turnaround of players this summer
The comparisons to Graham Turner and Jo Venglos are there but we need a complete transformation.
OGS also seemed an intelligent type in marked contrast to some of Fergie’s ex stooges like Keane and Robson. He started off as reserve team manager under Ferguson and could have stayed in England I’m sure if he wanted and gone to some Championship club. Instead he went back to his old club in Norway and won the league with them.
The likes of the three RTT has mentioned, the last three Villa managers, Allardyce, Dalglish, Pulis, Warnock etc have had their day I reckon. The day of being a master motivator of players solely and when that fails try and buy their affection with big wages or buying best of the rest players is over. English football is starting to realise I reckon that their product isnt anywhere near as good as hyped. That the credit bubble the EPL is still living in is not sustainable. Proper coaching, tactics, scouting, financial management is required to be a successful long term.
For some reason the appointment of OGS just seems right for Villa at this time. Its a pity English clubs are so anti director of football/general manager type roles as OGS could benefit from having a football man on the board supporting him. But I’m looking forward to what he can do and to finish in the top half next season playing decent football will be viewed as a positive for him I reckon.
suppose they were bolt from the blue appointments that turned out pretty badly.
before my time but I guess they were a combination of foreign exotic types and a manager from the minor leagues.
turner is still managing away. took shrewsbury up this season. nice story went back there last season, 26 years after his first reign there pre villa.
venglos I suppose promised innovative coaching, first manager outside Britain and Ireland to manage in the top division. took a title chasing title under Taylor almost to relegation in one season. McGrath has a heap of stories about his methods.
its the same with any job, you never know for sure if you have the right person. gut instinct tells me Solksjaer will be a good fit for the Villa.
Venglos would seem to me to have been a perfect fit for a Director of Football role if either Celtic or Villa had tried him there. He was clearly a knowledgeable guy with plenty of contacts, a good eye for a player, and a strategy that had been successful. Didn’t really get long at either job but he wasn’t getting good enough results.
