I love the football Ten Hag has them playing. Speed on and off the ball, loads of movement and quick interchanges and teams being opened up in 3 or 4 touches in a blaze of pace and passing. It’s electrifying tbf. I think Manchester United fans are rightfully excited about what the next few years holds in store if he’s delivered such significant improvement already. And it’s all happening within a solid overall team structure with everybody knowing their role and keeping defensively disciplined.

It was true at that time though. Manchester United were flying when they beat the Saudis in the League Cup final at the end of February 2023.

Ten Hag had made Rashford the best forward in English football.

Then the following week Jurgen Klopp’s out of form Liverpool went out and beat them 7-0 and basically ended Ten Hag’s tenure as Manchester United manager and Rashford’s career as a footballer.

It was to be fair. Man United were flying it when they beat Man City at home to leapfrog them in the table. The controversial goal for Bruno Fernandes was a nice little nod to their glory days when they regularly got the rub of the green in such scenarios. They even beat a resurgent Barcelona under Coach Xavi in the Europa League. It’s why I was slightly amused to hear Jonathan Wilson say it never felt like it was going to work at any stage in the Ten Hag reign. That was patently not true in January/February 2023 when there was a huge prevailing sense of optimism. The 7-0 at Liverpool killed that stone dead and it’s been a gradual decline ever since really.

Obviously the scoreline was emphatic but maybe the bigger issue was Bruno Fernandes begging to be substituted after getting destroyed by a teenager. Him being appointed Captain after Officer Class Harry was stripped of the armband would have destroyed morale.
