Like Marathon changed to Snickers and Opal Fruits to Starburst, Newton Heath rebranded to Manchester United when a group of local business men stepped in and cleared their debt. The UEFA website lists Manchester United year of formation as 1878. The club celebrated its centenary in 1978.No amount of googling or obfuscation will alter the facts pal.

There was me thinking that rebranding & marketing men were a creation of the Sky Sports/EPL post 1992 era. Manchester United (or should that be Newton Heath) were rebranding a full 90 years earlier in 1902.

A rare opportunity for the Old Trafford crowd today to actually see a club that was founded in 1878 in action as opposed to a club that pretends to be founded in 1878. West Bromwich Albion one of the founding 12 members of the football league, a club with real history and tradition are the visitors to Old Trafford.

I didn’t see the Man U game yesterday. Reading the match report in the Sunday papers today it sounded like typically turgid LVG fare. 86% possession for Man U in the first half but a full 43 minutes into the game before Man U had a shot on target.

For a certain type of Man U fan who seemingly put a premium on style above all else - ‘attack, attack, attack’ - it doesn’t appear to have been a good weekend.
