Holy fuck noelie. I was playing in this game. 23 years ago ffs.
Another job announcement due next Mondayā¦a few years ago we hadnāt see an IDA job for close to a decade in Limerick.
Are we actually witnessing a Limerick cabinet minister looking after his own - he obviously is an influence on it like him or loathe him.
Seriously though itās great to see these job announcements. Long may it continue.
IDA seriously slick operators by all accounts
Is there many employers in limerick with >1000 staff?
UL I assume
Anyone else?
Dell still have over 1000 believe it or not.
Northern Trust are supposed to have 700-800 nowā¦and are still heavily recruiting apparently.
Donāt think limerick should lay all its eggs in one basketā¦better to have a wider spread of these jobs imoā¦
Dell is still probably the biggest employer in Limerick.
Would UL directly employ >1000?? Itād be interesting to see some figures.
UL could be below that nowā¦a lot of people who retired this calendar year arenāt being replacedā¦especially in admin roles.
Still massive employer though, and a great number.
Thanks to chuck Feeny. the rest of the ida inspired employment and training would be subject to the āmichael noonanā method of adding sums
No harm in having a couple of v big employers. Good profile for the place
I was told recently that there was 8000 staff working in the Shannon Free Zone in 100 odd firms
There is a business Park in Cork has 1000 companies and 15000 staff, probably wouldnāt recognize 950 of the names of them companies, itās likes of them are adding savage value to the economy and flying under the radar completely (Iād say IDA responsible for huge amount of those companies)
You wouldnāt hurl job creation strategies to ducks sham
Bullshit. Thereās between 1500 and 2000 out there directly employed.
Regeneron must have quite a few staff, Vistakon? Analog?
Doubt any have >1000 but are probably significant employers at the same time.
Trueā¦itās just if they go tits up particularly when there was 3500 working in Dell in unskilled positionsā¦it can go very sour very quickly with a pile of other businesses going down with them.
In an ideal world, a wider spread of jobs and skills I suppose imo spreads the risk a bit.
Weāve seen it in Limerick multiple times over the last 50 yearsā¦Dells manufacturing plant being the most obvious example.
Vistakon would be the closest to 1000 of those 3.
Stryker is a fairly decent employer as well.
Do you work there pal?
Maybe there isā¦between everything out there.
Stryker?
Obviously not around the city, but Aughinish is still a big employer.
Nothing to do with cabinet ministers.
Yeah obviously it can go wrong but they can be great ambassador for the city too. Also have leverage to work with universities to develop courses suitable for industry leading to cluster effects etc
If Apple left Cork it would absolutely devastate the city but still worth pushing and pushing them to expand and hire more and put down bigger roots
Limerick has massive potential, hope this is start of a longer term shift away from Dublin focused employment growth
Not a lot of work stress in there Iād say.
