Will Tony o Doherty get his license back?

The aussies could kick him out I’d say

He must have needed to do a number two.

Was it @cowpat who perhaps had too much time to dwell

€50 thousand seems an awful lot of money to spend on a one night event such as this. It would be interesting if Lumen were to provide a detailed estimate of how exactly the money would have been spent. I suspect the bulk would be on salaries.

Do you think they just gather up a few college students at a loose end and walk down the road or what?

Well they do do that to be fair
But huge work goes into the costumes, displays etc

50k is small beans. It gets a great crowd and I’m sure is worth far more to the city economy than 50k. I know the last few years we’ve gone in early for dinner, then across for a few pints in Treaty while waiting. Easily dropping €100 on the visit.

Totally. I admit I’ve not seen this one but any of these kind of parades usually involve performers. Performers have to rehearse. Design and make costumes. You wouldn’t be long firing past 50k. Some people think the arts should be for free or on a shoestring.

My sister and friends of hers played classical stuff for his crew in the public thing in the Crescent a couple of nights in the summer, the night they laid out all the tables and people brought their own food. I’d say there were 500 odd people there and it went well. Probably more with people coming and going over the night. Think she got 200 for 8 or 9 songs.

I’d say he had something family orientated with the Halloween parade and he has overlooked that bit. He’s a smart guy so I wonder is there a bit of wumming in him cancelling this, even if it wasn’t necessarily cheap. It was going well, had broad appeal and had potential to be even better and bigger.

Limerick votes down Moran’s tax hike plan

JOHN MORAN WANTED AN INCREASE IN LOCAL PROPERTY TAX TO RAISE COUNCIL REVENUE

JACK HORGAN-JONES Political Correspondent

Mayor of Limerick John Moran has accused the Government of underfunding local authorities, meaning they must increase local property taxes to maintain services.

Moran saw a proposal to increase local property tax (LPT) in Limerick by 25 per cent for three years voted down by Limerick County and City Council this week; it instead chose to increase the levies by 15 per cent for next year.

In a letter to councillors before the vote, Moran said there was a ā€œgross underfunding of local government by central Governmentā€ that is becoming ā€œmore and more clear to me each year as we do our budget processā€.

Central Government sets a basic rate of LPT, but councils have the power to adjust that based on local factors. They can vary LPT upwards by up to 25 per cent – and can lower it by up to 15 per cent.

Speaking to The Irish Times, Moran said that Limerick, along with other local authorities, was facing increased structural costs in pensions and providing homeless services, as well as grappling with general inflation.

He accused the Government of leaving funding static: ā€œEven though all our costs are going up, the Government said the baseline number is going to be exactly the same as last year.ā€

He said his proposal had been voted down after amendments put down by Fine Gael and Fianna FĆ”il councillors, but said it would have added €1.7 million to LPT revenue – or around 10 per cent of its baseline funding from the Government.

Without that revenue, he said the local authority would have to either levy increased rates on business, find efficiencies – which he suggested would not be easy – or cut back on services.

An analysis done by council officials suggests 90 per cent of properties in Limerick would see an increase of no more than 64 cent per week in LPT if it increased by 25 per cent.

ā€œUnless we see extra money from Government [in the budget] … we are going to be faced with some very hard decisions in Limerick and other local authorities as to how to keep services running at the same level as last year.ā€

A spokesman for the Department of Housing and Local Government said Limerick had received an increase in baseline funding of €1.1 million from 2026 onwards, and said that overall, the council’s LPT allocation increased from €19.7 million in 2023 to €22.7 million in 2026.

Two increases

ā€œLPT baseline funding has therefore been increased twice within the past three years,ā€ the spokesman said.

ā€œAcross Government, every effort has been made to provide support to the sector and, in 2024, funding from central Government to local authorities totalled around €8.6 billion,ā€ he said, adding that this had increased 28 per cent since 2023 and central Government funding had more than doubled since 2019.

Michael Collins, a Fianna FĆ”il councillor in Limerick, said Moran’s proposal had been rejected following a ā€œdecisive democratic voteā€, saying the margin of 37 votes to two showed the opposition to the increase ā€œextended well beyond any one particular groupingā€.

ā€œAt a time when many families continue to face significant cost-of-living pressures, the overwhelming view of members was that maintaining the existing 15 per cent rate represented the most balanced and responsible approach,ā€ he said.

Fine Gael councillor John Sheahan said his group had ā€œdecided unanimously under the current climate nationally to keep the status quoā€.

Great lads they are…so they just gave themselves a 15% increase and throw the lads who was looking for a 25% increase under the bus… yep… sounds about right

You’d go just to gawk at them
