Matters Regarding Limerick 🏙️

Not a word about them now

All of the CCHA family & partners were out in different parts of Limerck last night. The town was busy at 615 and hopping for the night. It was great to see it.

Cost of Living Crisis my eye

Both Bearys & Rourkes X’s are serious accident blackspots. As is usual with the Council and NRA, they wait until there has been a number of fatalities at both locations before they put roundabouts in place. Something that has been blatantly needed for years to anyone with a working pair of eyes.

Unfortunately new roundabouts in the middle of nowhere are also death traps. People forget about them.

Always accidents after install I’m afraid. No matter him many signs they put up.

O’Rourke’s Cross is a major junction on the main route between the 2nd and 3rd largest cities. Beary’s Cross while maybe not as busy a junction is also on a national primary route. I wouldn’t describe either location as the middle of nowhere. I’ve never heard of anyone being killed at the Lantern Lodge roundabout outside Adare for example and that’s on another main ‘N’ route. These dangerous junctions need roundabouts. Otherwise motorists will continue to take chances when exiting from the ‘R’ roads onto the ‘N’ roads and we’ll see more fatalities.

Traffic calming facilities like these save lives. Installing yellow rumble strips on the road surface with adequate signage will leave no motorist in doubt that they’re approaching a roundabout.

I agree with you that a roundabout is a safer option except for the odd poor misfortune that forgets about it.

Ah here. Has there not been a pile of accidents there? Pretty sure someone was killed there in the past 18 months.

Speed kills - not so called “dangerous” roads.

You’re referring to the two separate fatalities which were unrelated to the roundabout and well up the road from it - the 12 year old Polish boy who decided to go for a drive at midnight and crossed onto the other side of road into an oncoming lorry.
And the lady working in UHL who was killed half a kilometre up the road towards Limerick at Mount Earl cross in a head-on collision.

There hasn’t been a fatality at the actual roundabout in a long time.

There was yeah

What do you want, them to die above on the roundabout? Adare is fucking lethal

Absolutely speed kills, nobody can deny that. But dangerous junctions/ bad roads add to the carnage. Unfortunately some drivers will never change their behaviour behind the wheel, so all you can do is mitigate the risk by road improvements.

A bit of an Ooooft for @TreatyStones . The Ooofter has been Ooofted….

Surely loads of ways to calm the traffic into a new roundabout, chicane, speed bumps, massive signage etc

You couldn’t just lave it alone.

I don’t think so.

I’m in Limerick nearly as long as that roundabout at the Lantern Lodge and a fair few cars have implanted themselves in the lodge itself. Especially in the early years. We’re talking 30 years or more now. No accidents now.

My argument above was for accidents rather than deaths. How many times have we seen a car upside down in the middle of a new roundabout?

More accidents I’d guess with the initial introduction of a roundabout but less deaths overall.

Didn’t Mary O’Rourke have a nice little tangle with the new one (at the time) outside Clonmel?

The lantern lodge roundabout is a Mickey Mouse one. You need a proper one at Rourkes Cross, it’s a death trap.

The roundabout at Irish Cement used to always have an auld motor plonked on top of it years ago, usually the morning after the night before.
In fairness Rourkes X would make you nervous. Somethind need there, either speed ramps to slow the traffic right down or lights, or some kind of a roundabout. You could hardly call the roundabout at the lantern lodge “lethal”. What is lethal is the traffic coming in to Adare from the NCW direction at high speed, especially trucks, they’re still doing a fair speed even while passing that motorcyle/tractor place near the edge of the village, so have to hit the brakes by the school.

Fecking Greens cutting off the electricity already.,
