Matters Regarding Limerick 🏙️

I think the esteemed Cllr would want to read up on internet memes before he starts accusing people of wishing him ill. Get in the Sea a long running gag that came from a stand-up routine. Mortified for him.

Emmett seems an overly sensitive type to criticism

What is Occupy Catherine Street ??

The militant wing of OIUTF are taking back Flannerys

Part of the Pedestrianise Limerick movement/effort

as in the whole lot like?

There was some decision by the Council last week against a pedestrianisation plan, this lot had had been behind that, I haven’t counted them individually though. Yet.

we’ve crossed wires.
As in the lads want all of Limerick pedestrianised?

You kind of answered it there anyway.

So the council decided not to do something, as is their right. And they get attacked on twitter because some gowls didn’t get their own way?

The city is dead… gone… lost to outlets on the outskirts.

Some people think it can be revived by pedestrianizing it … those are the battle lines.

From what I gather, this crowd feel that the city centre should be utilised by and be more accessible for people living in the city. The current emphasis being more towards 9-5 traders and workers, meaning more car traffic than foot traffic. There was a campaign before that vote last week towards a pedestrian plan but as you say, the council went against it.

The city is dying, the two way end of Catherine street is disgusting, an awful eyesore, there is a huge split in the business community, I actually have no idea what is motivating the leave it as it is side? Something has to be done.

But you’ve the likes of yer man Dugdale, mouses councilor pal and various other twitter dafties who think Limerick can be Copenhagen, Utrecht or Vanvouver with a small bit of funding and a few more hipster coffee joints, Christ you’d be mithered

The reality is somewhere in the middle, but something does need to be done

Agreed … The retailers arguing that cutting off traffic would kill them are in another world — 70% of traffic is just passing through the city … But without a decent park n ride or low cost parking why would people go into the city…

@EstebanSexface taking the council’s side here is sickening.

@Thomas_Brady has a point. The likes of the outlets on the childers road soak up any one from that side of the town. The Crescent eats up the Raheen/Dooradoyle side. You’ve a load of shops on the outskirts out the Ennis road side. Nobody needs to go to the City any more.

A lot of the housing estates are outside a comfortable stroll into the City.

They need to draw people back into the City with attractions, like festivals, making it nice looking or as you say putting in a few hipstery joints won’t have a long term effect.

You must create a need to be in town in the first place

even with decent parking and a park and ride there is no need to go into town

The Cruises St pedestrian experiment hasn’t aged well either

You had a poster here before (can’t remember who) that was afraid to try and parallel park in the city and planned to drive as far as Raheen and get the bus in :joy:

The only need is to post in the ‘I’m going into town’ thread

Pedestrianisation of the city is a great idea imho but many campaigning for it have put the cart before the horse. Biggest issue is the volume of traffic passing through the city needs to be removed. Finishing the road from coonagh to the mackey roundabout will take the need for cars from the northside and corbally to pass through. Removing the toll on the tunnel would be a big help too. Park and ride as @Thomas_Brady suggests could work if the bus services was improved. You could have park and rides or a bus stop with parking in raheen castletroy and coonagh for anyone heading to the city

why would you park alongside a big shopping centre that has everything you need and then ride to town when you can already get what you want where you are?

There needs to be a draw first. Attractions.
