I watched it back there the other day, and Iāll probably watch it again. Where else would you get it. I donāt think there is another sport where youād get crowds like that and everyone on the team is from the same place as the fans. (bar international sports games obviously, but even now, not all the players are ālocalsā). Is there another sport?

Only feel a slight pang of jealousy that Waterford never did it.

Waterford getting mentioned a lot as the next one up. The rest of us with nothing are just not recād.
The beautiful thing about it is the stories about loved ones who are gone and never saw it and how they are being remembered. The story from the daughter of the publican with dementia was particularly heartbreaking but all she said was days like today remind her of all the great days they had following Mayo and isnt that what the GAA and family is about.
Thats the beauty right there. My father once said, you could find 10 reasons a day to fall out with the GAA if you want, but isnāt it better to get in alongside the ones trying to drive it on and do something about it rather than bitch and moan. He wasnt wrong.

Myself and one of my brother often lament that we werenāt of drinking age in 1995 - the scenes of jubilation and the party which seemed to go on all night are still vivid in our minds.
In 97 there was a scuffle in the pub when an English blow in saw it as his chance to soften a fella with a sneaky box and I remember the father stepping in and breaking the whole thing up. We were agog at it all and for a few minutes afterwards he was a bigger hero to us than Brian Lohan or Sean McMahon.
I was the right age for 2013 and knocked serious sport out of the draw and replay but I thought 2024 was a bit of an anti climax. Maybe we got a tad used to it, maybe I am just older now, maybe people have moved on from the pub in the last ten years but we struck for home straight after the match and were back in east Clare for the Sunday game but the pub felt a bit like an above average Saturday night.

Iāve a wedding up there at the weekend and the groom will be a full week on the beer by throw-in. Itās gonna be some craic once I take my customary digs in fairness. The bride reckons theyāll have Sam at the afters but I think thereās at least 2 cups doing the rounds nowadays for the winners.

Waterford are only in the haāpenny place.
Mayo bring huge supporter numbers consistently. The Waterford support outside of the bandwagon is very small.
Thereāll never be another Mayo. Thats the beauty of this. Thereās not going to be anything similar in our lifetimes. The Clare one was big but it was a different Ireland then too.
Which is why it needs to be enjoyed and celebrated and let them at it.
But the Waterford is next on the list if and when.

The Mayo support was actually way way down in recent years. The 21 final broke a lot of them I think and they just gave up on the team. The bandwagoners will all be back next year now. Even though the destination has now been reached.

Cork ending their famine would have wilder scenes than Waterford Iād wager. The gougers in Waterford city would ruin it on the rest of the county

I think the hooter added to it all. When they got the final point, they could actually celebrate it. No ball was getting up the field and into the net in 15 seconds or so. Might have been a different story in a hurling match.

Was wondering the same myself. He was on the receiving end of that awful shoulder by John Small back in 2021. Was a mainstay of the team at that point. Fergal Boland was arguably their player of the championship last year but hardly saw any gametime this year. I did spot McLoughlin in the pub with the team at the homecoming.
Must be hard to watch in 1 way.
