MLS All-Stars vs Celtic - Thurs night/Friday morn

It’s a 2am kick-off.

Any chance tfk could get coverage of this game? I see it’s been designated as a Channel 67 only game - that’s Celtic’s online channel.

Ronnie O’Brien, former Time Magazine Person of the Year is in the MLS squad and that emphasises how difficult this game will be.

As Celtic can’t compete with a lot of European teams financially due to the constraint of playing in the SPL money needs to be made in other ways. Putting on a show and giving this mob a good hiding would be a decent way of getting established in the US market.

Complete MLS All-Star Roster:

Goalkeepers: Matt Reis (New England Revolution), Kevin Hartman (Kansas City Wizards)

Defenders: Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards), Michael Parkhurst (New England Revolution), Eddie Pope (Real Salt Lake)

Midfielders: Ricardo Clark (Houston Dynamo), Dwayne De Rosario (Houston Dynamo), Christian Gomez (D.C. United), Cobi Jones (Los Angeles Galaxy), Shalrie Joseph (New England Revolution), Pablo Mastroeni (Colorado Rapids), Ronnie O’Brien (Toronto FC), Juan Toja (FC Dallas)

Forwards: Juan Pablo Angel (Red Bull New York), Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Landon Donovan (Los Angeles Galaxy), Eddie Johnson (Kansas City Wizards)

It will be on TFK via ESPN.

Wouldn’t mind seeing Shalrie Joseph playing to see if he’s worth our interest. Why isn’t Adu in the squad?

Didn’t think I’d know many of them but Angel, Donovan and Johnson are all reasonable attackers. Dwayne de Rosario hit that brilliant free kick that’s ohn youtube, Cobi Jones we all know. Ronnie O’Brien - legend, and Edidie Pope isn’t a bad player.

He’s on the disabled list.

The game is taking place in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City. You gotta love that.

To be fair to O’Brien he is making a bit of a name for himself over there. This will be his fourth year in a row to play on the all-star team. His stats for his new team (Toronto FC) make for impressive reading. He has had four assists in his first eleven games under boss Mo Johnston.

O’Brien was interviewed by the Evening Herald after the Time Magazine vote.

EH: “Ronnie, what did you make of being voted Time Magazine person of the year?”

RO’B: “I deserved it”

Another Bray legend.

That Time magazine thing is classic.

From Wikipedia:

Time Magazine stunt
Excerpted:

In August 1999, Time Magazine in the United States conducted an internet poll to find the Person of the Century. Mischievous friends in Bray sent an e-mail urging Irish people to vote for Ronnie O’Brien. O’Brien vaulted his way to the top of the standings, beating out such notables as Albert Einstein, Martin Luther King and Bill Clinton. Then there was a computer crash, which Time said was a result of too many people voting online at once. Instead of being named Person of the Century, O’Brien was taken out of the running, because Time officials said not enough people had heard of him. The official rules stated, “whimsical candidates will not be counted.”[1]

Similarly, O’Brien was also voted Juventus’s best ever player, even though he never played a game for the club. An email was sent around between Irish students who propelled O’Brien to the number one position in the poll. He received 32% of the vote.[2]

He’s at the U-20 World Cup with the US is he not? Or if they’ve been knocked out, on his holidays I’d assume.

Yeah, the U-20 World Cup is exactly where Freddie Agadoo doo doo is.

As well as Dick’s Sporting Goods Park where this game is on Beckham will be playing at The Home Depot Center.

It was some funny on SSN the other night - they had live coverage of his first training session.

‘And there goes Beckham…he’s actually moving away from the rest of the squad…HE’S INJURED.’

What time is this on lads and is it on ESPN?

I think it’s ESPN 2 that it’s on. Have you got ESPN 2 or just ESPN?

Time is:

Thu Jul 19 06:00PM Pacific
Thu Jul 19 07:00PM Mountain
Thu Jul 19 08:00PM Central
Thu Jul 19 09:00PM Eastern

I have both. Thanks for the info. Will try and watch it.

TRY? You should be going to the game not debating whether to come in from the beach to watch your bhoyhood heroes in action.

It’s definitely ESPN 2 that it’s on and also something called Galavision. Interested to see what the reaction is like from the yanks if you do watch it on ESPN.

It could be a battle for that and some Jewish comedy with the remote. I’m four hours time difference from LA also (which I am guessing western means) which means it will be on around 1 here I think)

The yanks are gas. The tale of the tape thing below is ridiculous:

Facing years of Celtic pride

By TOBIAS XAVIER LOPEZ

Celtic FC fans understand two things, soccer and Catholicism. The two go hand-in-hand for the Scottish club rather than being separate entities.

The city of Glasgow, Scotland, is divided into two factions.

In the U.S., north and south sides of a city can dictate allegiances. Major league baseball’s Chicago Cubs and White Sox are an example.

For more than a century, Glasgow Catholics and Protestants have split their sporting loyalties along denominational lines.

For the Catholics, Celtic is the club of choice.

For the Protestants, Rangers are the only bet.

In the past 10 years the clubs have tried to stop the hooliganism and the sectarianism associated with the “Old Firm” rivalry. However, loyalties remain and the match days between the clubs remain alcohol-free and fan-segregated.

Can the All-Stars make it 4-0 against international competition, or will the Celtic tradition (41 Scottish Premier League titles) be too much? David Beckham isn’t playing for MLS, but the newly unveiled Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder is expected to attend.

Tale of the tape

Category MLS All-Stars Celtic FC

Founded 1996 1887 Celtic Advantage Celtic

Uniforms 2007 Adidas blue/white generic Signature green/white stripes or “Hoops” Advantage Celtic

Stadium Dick’s Sporting Goods Park (opened 2007) Celtic Park (opened 1888, refurbished 1995) Advantage MLS

Top forward Juan Pablo Angel (New York Red Bulls) Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (Netherlands) Advantage MLS

Top midfielder Juan Toja (FC Dallas) Scott Brown (Scotland) push

Top defender Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards) Bodo Balde (Guinea) Advantage Celtic

Top goalkeeper Matt Reis (New England Revolution) Artur Boruc (Poland) Advantage MLS

Coach Steve Nicol (New England Revolution) Gordon Strachan (Scotland) Advantage Celtic

Intangibles Solid talent but no time to mesh Preseason form Advantage MLS

MLS All-Stars vs. Celtic FC

That tale of the tape is off the chain.

I see Nicol’s quote online too: ‘Being a Rangers supporter I want to beat Celtic.’

John Spencer is his assistant!

This will be competitive enough I’d imagine.

Re:MLS All-Stars vs Celtic - Thurs night/Friday mo

Looking forward to this now. Are you watching it Bandage?

I’m not 100% sure what program the game will be available through yet but it’s highly likely to be SopCast and then channel 14391.

So go to the Live Sport page and download the relevant program. The channel isn’t available yet so it’s not in the listings but it should be there later. I’ll keep an eye on it anyway and if it’s looking dodgy at 1:45 or so then I’ll offer an alternative.

I have downloaded, installed and run the sop programme but when I click on any of the channels in ‘Live Sport’ nothing happens - there is no picture at all. In the area where you’d expect a picture there is nothing only a tiny box with a red ‘x’ in it. Very concerned now.

Re:MLS All-Stars vs Celtic - Thurs night/Friday mo

Are you using Internet Explorer?

Re:MLS All-Stars vs Celtic - Thurs night/Friday mo

Bandage - I’m offline now until about half one or so but I’ll be back then to sort it out.

If you were running the Live Sport link through firefox it won’t work. It requires Internet Explorer.

Also I have an alternative methodology for you.

Download and install Viper Player http://www.fsicrew.info/validate/dir.php?http://www.MegaShare.com/231449 [YOU NEED TO ENTER A PASSWORD BEFORE DOWNLOADING WHICH IS “bookworm”]

Install that and run it.

The match is on channel 59 (VP-Z) through there I think.

The SopCast thing is probably more reliable though.

Re:MLS All-Stars vs Celtic - Thurs night/Friday mo

Seems it’s a half two kick off - only the programme starts at two.
