Common misconception of people in Ireland, sadly. The combined bank debt of the six major banks in Ireland in 2007 was roughly $100B. For every creditor thereās a debtor, most of that debt was held by foreign (German, French) pension funds, so in fact the assumed risk of Irish borrowers was minimal. Under normal economic times, Irelandās govt could have and should have told the IMF/ECB to go fuck themselves, but when you are running the kind of deficit the Irish govt were at the time you have no leg to stand on.

Incorrect. You are putting words into my mouth here. Moving the goalposts to suit yourself. I am no fan of most of the unions in the public sector but I do not go around blaming public sector workers. I believe the poor performance of many state/semi state areas is not due to due PS workers., I wrote a post about this in the not too distant past in fact. There are lots of well performing state bodies as well which I pointed out.
You are imagining things. The Unions still get the opportunity to sit down with the Government here regularly and to hammer out deals. Industrial discontent in the public sector in Ireland has been incredibly low in Ireland for 30 years. A central plank of Bertie Ahernās idea for a well run Irish economy was to avoid industrial disputes, and he did.

Regarding the property boom, letās not talk about the elected government of the people who surrendered Irelandās monetary policy, the first time buyers grants when the market cooled a little, the various tax payer funded ārenewalā schemes throughout the country which left ghost estatesā¦
