Thatâs a huge loss for Munster. They already needed another 2nd row for next season before this. Dave Foley gone to Pau too. Ryan is a big loss to Ireland too but Ireland have more cover. Heâs our best 2nd row and was wrongly left out by Schmidt a lot since he took over.
Whoâs coming in to replace both of them?
Joe has very limited say in this iâd say. Asked for an opinion and report on the players and where he sees them but i think top brass are making the big calls.
Provincial coaches have even less say
Schmidt shown up big time by Ryan in the 6 nations IMO. Didnât pick pick him for match day at the start, choosing players in not great form or barely back from injury ahead of him. By the end, he had to start Ryan ahead of Toner, having always backed Toner at every opportunity til now. As clear an example as you could see of a selection decision being proved wrong.
Schmidt hasnât a breeze.
Schmidt out, Kiely out, Enda out.
No coincidence that all three are school teachers.
He has being making poor selection decisions since he started with Ireland imo, usually favouring an out of form or not good enough Leinster player over somebody else, but you canât argue with a winning coach. Now that the team have been consistently inconsistent since winning the championship in 2015, questions are rightly being asked. Heâs still the best option we have though.
Pretty clear policy of selecting players that know his methods/know the system rather than selecting based on form. Very frustrating, not what sport is supposed to be about IMO. It fits with his outlook of trusting his âsystemâ more than he trusts players.
Schmidt is the Trappatoni of rugby.
good post mate

Our man OâMahoney made him look a right mug.
Ya because his coaching methods are too hard for them to grasp or understand.
I have noticed a tetchyness with him recently though. He doesnât like being questioned on certain subjects.
Tgey were great players but alot of those Munster lsds would anmoy you with their inability to evolve. Pat Lam and Townsend have shown the way its gone und until RE arrived Munster were dropping like a stone and the overall impression of the standard of player was distorted. I heard from Munster people saying âwe just donât have the money or the talentâ. But RE has shown that they were just excuses and/or a chance for some people to reaffirm how great they were.
The decision to appoint Rassie freed Foley up to work more on the field, as opposed to driving around half the country to discuss terms with the likes of Madigan and Henshaw, etc who were never going to come to Munster anyway.
Ryanâs move to Racing due to be confirmed in the next few days.
Ya but why was Rob Penny got rid of/pushed out?

He wasnât playing the âMunster wayâ and they grew tired of him. It was a foolish decision.
Absolutely. I think Erasmus will do a ruthless enough cull over next while which was badly needing. Likes of Dave Foley a good example. Decent player but not standard of European cup winning side. Erasmus has given loads of chances to young lads he rates.
