WOD isnt even going to bring his hurley the next day, so he can use both arms to headlock lads
Morey and Flanagan have far more pedigree/experience than Nolan and would have been a much safer bet to belt away with Gillane for the 70 minutes.
It was a huge risk to start him and further madness not to make the switch at half time.
Tis nowt but a hindrance to him anyways.
I have come to the conclusion its absolutely impossible to referee these games.
Everyone is just running into each other and its a borderline foul by the defender and/or steps from the attacker each time. Its like a Rugby match nowadays and a lot of frees can often go either way.
For the free at the end, Gordon seemed to decide, ‘I’m giving ye an extra few seconds to work a Hollywood point, but under no circumstances am I giving ye a free to draw it up’.
He doesn’t watch hurling
Few stand out stats here.
Limericks conversion rate still not where you’d want it to be, but very bad from Clare.
5 dropped short. 50% on frees
I may need to revise this as I just heard Lohan’s interview saying his team don’t get these frees, as if they’re somehow hard done by or put upon regularly. Pure nonsense.
Byrnes was actually very good defensively yesterday imo. He was on Tony Kelly for long periods of that game and generally did quite well, considering he would not be known for his defensive abilities.
He didn’t do much striking but that’s a Clare tactical deployment as much as anything. When Limerick had the ball, they pressed right up on our half-back line to try stop us playing through the lines. You hear absolute nonsense spouted in the media at times about how you have to go man-to-man on Limerick’s half-forward line but the only way you can actually do that and not got destroyed is if you also go man-to-man on Limerick’s backs. It’s very hard to do for 70 minutes, so you probably have to pick & choose which players you’re happier to have it but Byrnes is a no-go for Clare.
Which makes sense because his long-range distribution is so good. But if he can’t get a short puckout, or a short pass when working it out, what is his role? To be a defender, and he did that well. You won’t win an All Star by being solid defensively at wing-back and we usually need him to deliver the ball or we’re in trouble but because there was so much space to hit, it didn’t really matter who did the deliveries today. Same applied to Hannon really, although Clare did get a couple of overlaps through the middle, so he’d be disappointed with that.
Nash aswell was absolutely superb. Defensively, made two massive contributions to stop Clare getting through for goal and so slick in his hurling. Kyle was also totally dominant down his side, Fitzgerald has killed us in previous encounters and he never got going yesterday at all. Kyle maybe needs to let the ball go quicker but he had space to attack at times.
2001 was a belter of a Munster championship too. Limerick winning down in Cork, the intensity of the knockout game between Tipp and Clare. Limerick staging a stunning comeback against Waterford and Tipp winning a good final by a couple of points. Maybe this year edges it for sheer volume of games but ideally as a neutral you’d have preferred if Waterford had won a game earlier or been more competitive against Cork and Clare to keep all 5 teams in contention.
Undoubtedly an alright sort but he hadn’t an ounce of grace yesterday.
It’s actually unfair to put him in that position anyway by having him on panel.
You could see he just wanted to be down amongst his own god bless him.
Tbf to Gordon I didn’t see the Tony Kelly one myself in real time and could see why he thought Hayes was trying to buy one. I’m not mad at him at all over result. We fcuked it away ourselves
Literally nobody said Limerick were dead and buried tbh. Obviously that’s an angle DOD and the Limerick panel created to help build a bit of a siege mentality. If anything yesterdays game will serve to offer more hope to the chasing pack. Limerick looked eminently beatable yesterday. I’d say Mul’s days as a starter must be numbered now. A great servant but he’s not really contributing much in terms of scoring threat these days.
My first time hearing it post match was after the draw between Wexford and Cork in that thrilling All-Ireland semi-final in 2003. The day Rory McCarthy snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat. I’d say 2003 was its inaugural year in Croker?
The aul Michael Jordan inventing enemies and criticism to get an edge. All the great ones do it to be fair.
He had two points in less than ten mins agin Tipp.
Was Casey not hanging out of his man?
Not according to Anthony Daly anyway.
He was during the game but in that instance it was very harsh. He didn’t look to do much wrong.
Again it looked to me to be an ear piece call. When he blew I didn’t think he’d book him.
