Munster Senior Hurling Championship 2023 (Part 1)

Tipp will be happy enough to be back competing but they have a reliance on some key men in their spine still who are pushing on I feel.

That said the likes of Paddy McCormack would improve them if he continues to develop. The bounce this year might not endure into next year if they cant build on to what they have.

The players are not there, only for Foudy they would have gone out of the championship with two points. Cahill is absolutely clueless, whacktics but he did not have the players to implement the plan.

It wasn’t a good year. In fact it fizzled out pretty badly.

Cahill will get another go but he really needs to reflect and reassess how he operates. Like Conor Bowe wasn’t deemed worthy of making the 26 last week and played a Club game last Sunday morning yet he was the first man thrown in to save the day last night. He was brought on and taken off twice this year. I get the feeling a lot of lads don’t know where they stand. The use/non use of Johnny Ryan after the Cork game was puzzling. Barrett wasnt ready for yesterday.

Its the worst Tipp team in my lifetime but you’d still expect way more than the total non-performance yesterday. In truth it should have been a 10 point defeat against a Galway team who themselves were terrible.

The two years he did well with Waterford were Covid years when he wouldn’t have had half as much interaction with players as normal. Theres something in that I think.

Waterford had 4 or 5 near prime, elite players as well. I think Tipp should move on to someone who will play more to their traditional style.

Wasn’t Cahill a windy corner forward back in the day? I’m not sure I’d respect this hard edge look he’s going for as a manager if I was playing for him. Like James Horan when he was with Mayo, who was a windy wing forward. If I was under 30, I’d also refuse to play for any manager who’s involved with FFG so I think Wexford need a new football manager too.

Yes Waterford actually like running whereas its alien to Tipp.

The way thar game went last night should have suited Tipp with the whacktics but anyway. They were so bad.

Some highly perceptive points there.

I have been told by astute Tipperary people that LC is considered the county’s shrewdest judge of a hurler since Theo English. But how shrewd is LC on hurling?

There is also a fine line between commendable mental stamina and wilful stubbornness – an observation that could also be made of Brian Cody and Brian Lohan.

The prime golden generation of Tipperary were unlucky to run up against this Limerick team post 2018

Liam Sheedy would have stayed on if he thought they had a chance of turning the tide.

Cahill needs to find 3 or 4 players and perhaps change style

Needs to find 7 or 8 for the next two seasons. Look at the age profile.

Was it half a dozen starters who will be 30 or more next year?

Lohan definitely seems to be ignoring his management team.

Two from limerick and one from tipp.
He does not want to hear from them now.

I dont know how shrewd he is.

Maybe it had to be done but i think he weakened the panel when he got rid of Flynn x2, Connors, Byrne etc and replaced them with Joe Fogarty, Jack Ryan, Sean Ryan and Campion x2. Bubbles should also have been in the frame.

Its a real pity if that was to be Noel McGrath and Callanan’s last day out for Tipp.

Would not know anything about that facet but BL, while I greatly admire him, has made some fairly obvious dubious selection decisions.

Clare have the requisite 20 or so hurlers needed to win an All Ireland. If they are all fit, it is hard to fancy Kilkenny to beat them.

The glitch might be that the Clare backs’ stickwork and touch – as in the round robin first half against Waterford – can sometimes be brutal.

Well, Byrnes had to go.

Serious though, who else is there to add? I spend a lot of time in tipp and don’t get much of an answer when I ask that question.

There isn’t anyone.

That is the problem. A few of this years U20’s were called in for a finish this year but none of them are really rated. Maybe Sean Kenneally from Moneygall is the pick of them.

This years Harty Cup final was a real eye opener for a lot of Tipp people as to how bad things were. Nobody could put the ball over the bar as Cashel edged out Thurles in an awful game 0-12 to 0-11.

Winning U20 panel in 2019…

Aaron Browne; Conor McCarthy, Eoghan Connolly, Craig Morgan; Niall Heffernan, Paddy Cadell, Bryan O’Mara; Ciaran Connolly, Jerome Cahill; Gearoid O’Connor, Jake Morris, Johnny Ryan; Andrew Ormond, Billy Seymour, Conor Bowe. Subs: Sean Hayes, Kian O’Kelly, Joe Fogarty, Cathal Bourke, Michael Purcell.

So, we’ve seen Morgan, Connolly, Cadell, O’Mara, GOC, Morris, Johnny Ryan, Bowe.

What other young forwards are viable or worth looking at from recent U20’s?

You would know far better on that stuff than me. What do you think will be the shape of the Tipperary championship team in 2024?

Rhys Shelley [24]

Cathal Barrett [31]
Rónan Maher [29]
Craig Morgan [25]

Séamus Kennedy [31]
Bryan O’Mara [25]
Johnny Ryan [24]

Conor Stakelum [26]
Alan Tynan [27]

Michael Breen [30]
Gearóid O’Connor [24]
Conor Bowe [24]

Jake Morris [25]
Mark Kehoe [26]
Andrew Ormond [24]

Paddy Cadell [25], Joe Fogarty [24], Jason Forde [31], Brian McGrath [26] and John McGrath [30] also in mix, presumably.

I am probably missing co-ordinates?

Connolly hopefully in the mix at MF so you could possibly put Tynan WF instead of Breen

Ciarán Connolly? Yes, forgot him.

Would CS be a better wing forward than AT?

Possibly
