Munster Senior Hurling Championship 2023 (Part 1)

I’d agree on that, and apparently there are already limits on it that are just ignored.

Although if people can’t shoot from as far out, it’s very likely to reward defensive hurling too so there’s probably a balance to be had.

If you were a coach, and points are now harder to get from distance, there’s much bigger reward for sitting your defence deeper to prevent goals.

Making the Hurley smaller is risky. It’s a tricky game to play and takes more time than many other sports. That’s why niche sports like snooker aren’t popular because they take so much more time to perfect.

I’m not sure that suits modern kids who have so many options.

Realistically anyway at the moment these changes will make little difference. In the current format 3 or 4 counties will only be able to compete.

Unless the gaa to decide to grow game and support the lower tier counties the game will remain in a poor state overall.

I hear this on hurling podcasts, we need to invest in Westmeath, Kerry etc. They will never be contenders, dont have the pick. Kildare the only chance of a new team coming on board. Big pick but i think i saw their minors were hammered the weekend.

So what you should just say fuck them? That’s a great attitude.

At the moment it’s fairly easy to see the game
Die out in Wexford and Waterford.

Antrim don’t seem to cause issues for anybody anymore. Offaly haven’t been a force in nearly 20 years .

I never buy a ticket for a club game. My cash hasn’t been turned away yet

A “philanthropist” :grinning:. A sports washer more like.

You can spin it that way too. You’ll have Limerick hurling supporters who’ll defend him no matter what but the point is not many other counties will be as lucky.

Look, people get older, their interests change. You don’t need to justify not going to matches by pretending you are on some noble crusade.

It reminds me of when @Bandage used a price rise in the 51 as an excuse for not spending every Saturday on the beer in one of the worst pubs in Dublin.

Joe Dooley did a solid job in the dying embers of Offaly’s era of competitiveness. Did he beat Limerick in championship in 2008 and 2010? I inadvertently once stayed in an Air B and B that was actually his house with a couple of pals. I noticed the framed All-Star team on the wall and a few pictures of the Dooley’s but only copped for certain the following morning when I was doing a haphazard job of reversing in his drive and Joe gave me a big smile. A gentleman I’d imagine.

I’m still interested in the sport just not in its current guise.

It’s steam rolling towards professionalism and that isn’t right.

Limerick got a right roasting by Offaly in 08. I could be wrong but I’d say the game was played on a Thursday evening. Was it joe bergin who destroyed at evening? It was in the Gaelic grounds.

My goodness. :anguished:

Pretty sure I was at Oxygen in 08 when Limerick were beaten by Offaly (on the Saturday night). They had a big screen setup for the Munster Final on the Sunday, but it was quenched half way through after the Clare and Tipp fans rioted like English soccer yobs.

Maybe but it was definitely an evening game and nice weather too.

Was that the Time they’d a mini league of qualifiers? I remember Limerick played Galway in one and lost. Michael Clifford of adare was playing. Possibly his only game.

Can pump millions into Kerry and Westmeath hurling and it will make no difference. It is a numbers game. They dont have the numbers.

I have a feeling that game was in 2003 that was played on a Thursday. I watched it on TV as a child. Offaly must have won because I subsequently remember them losing to Tipp in the quarters on the same day Wexford beat Antrim after a major scare.

Was is it a Thursday night?

It was 2003. Think it may have been Ciaran Carey’s last game for limerick

You could be right my memory is gone to the dogs. I spent today trying to pick a Limerick 1-15 who only played less than five championship games but it’s sort of ruined by the strike years.
