You obviously weren’t around late 80s early 90s. Cork and Tipp only 2 teams in Munster. Kilkenny, Wexford and Offaly in Leinster. Galway straight into All Ireland semi every year. Actually more competitive now.
We are only at the beginning of the impact of this new semi pro era with all these games. The trends are worrying and above all else the money involved to be competitive now is just wrong in my opinion.
Pro rugby boomed for ten years before it started to decline don’t forget.
What about the provincial and All-Ireland club championships. You couldn’t just have every county championship sitting idle drinking from the cup for 2 or 3 months while they wait for inter-county to finish. Provincial and All-Ireland clubs are one of the jewels in the crown. I’d agree that the championship starts too early now though. You’re county could be out of championship before the secondary schools have their summer holidays. Children would be far less inclined to watch the Sunday Game highlights package when they have to be up early the following morning. The rhythm and tradition has been disrupted.
Their would be some outcry if you had 3 months of inter county hurling. Format the problem for me. Leinstet is totally uncompetitive while anyone could come out of Munster. Get rid of provincial and have 2 groups of 5 home and away. Provincial championships as your early season competitions like the football.
JP has sponsored us since 04 funny how unlike soccer it took 14 years to win an AI, yes financial backing helps but maybe just maybe it was the right structure and generational players that came along, a crazy thought I know.
I am almost certain Tipp played Kerry in a Munster minor football final replay the same day out in Ennis. I was aghast at the idea of paying €15 to go into that barn to watch a football match. We were driving back into Limerick afterwards and passed Gaelic Grounds and were tempted to stop in for the hurling but our driver had pints on his mind
