I find bands like the Avett Brothers and Fleet Foxes to be a bit sickly sweet for my tastes. I can see how they’re good, I just don’t enjoy their music.Having said that I like the equivalent folksy stuff from London from the likes of Laura Marling and Johnny Flynn.
Been listening to Villagers again a fair bit recently, that’s a cracking album he/they had out.
Yeah I can equally see why people wouldn’t be a fan and was gonna say as much when referring them to bandage… but as big a fan of the more complex or darker music that I am , I find the simple litte ditty or harmony when done well most enjoyable… The Beatles are my great love.
It will be interesting to see how the villagers follow up their first album. Have seen them live twice and think they (him) are a fantastic band (artist). Coming to Limericks big top next week too.
Fleet Foxes were great the first time IMO except we were in a crap position beside the side exit of the tent. Also I believe you were off your chops at the time - hence why I moved away from you and the others in towards the stage and enjoyed the gig much more.
The 2nd time at Glastonbury they weren’t great alright. I’d still go see them in a venue like Vicar Street though.
Agree with another poster that the new Bon Iver album is really really good.

I would accordingly recommend:
Clan Carney
Bright Eyes/Oberst
Frightened Rabbit (stolen from some no-mark on here)
PJ Harvey
The Decemberists
The Civil Wars
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros (perhaps a bit twee for male listeners)
Slow Club (same warning applies)
The Mighty Stef
Villagers[/quote]
Can’t see what Leotardo posted until I get home from work…
Thanks for the list Rocko. Not just did I have my mp3 player stolen I also had music wiped from my laptop somehow so there’s loads of stuff that I used to listen to that I don’t have any more. PJ Harvey would fall into that category; she’s deadly.
I think I listened to Frightened Rabbit in your car going to a game once and I thought they were shite.
Emancipator is Doug Appling. He is in his early 20s. He is practically a one man band, and there seems to be a very nature feel to all his tunes.
He has two albums, Soon It Will be Cold Enough, and Safe in the Deep Cliffs. Soon It Will be Cold Enough is a masterpiece and the first tune posted above is from that. I think the album is from around 2008, but it was only recommended to me around 2010. Safe in the Deep Cliffs isn’t as good but still better than your average fair. That was from 2010.
Both albums are impossible to get on CD so I downloaded both from the web. If you need links etc, let me know.
Regarding The Mountain Goats (who are really just the lead singer John Darnielle), their best album is considered to be ‘The Sunset Tree’ while the track I posted above is taken from their newest release ‘All Eternal’s Deck’ - I’d start with those two, but ‘Tallahassee’ and ‘We Shall All Be Healed’ are also highly rated. Here are three songs Darnielle is probably best known for…
What is it Farmer? I can’t see site videos in work.
Could someone please tell me about Nick Cave? Have been listening to bits of his stuff over the last week. Some of it appears to border on genius but I’ve only been listening to random songs. Anyone recommend particular albums or where to start?
It’s a bloke called Huck Notari and the song is ‘Wall Around Your Heart’.
The Good Son by Nick Cave from 1990 would be up there with my favourite ever albums. Henry’s Dream from 1992 is also superb as is the Boatman’s Call from 1997 (with Into My Arms on it). I am not gone at all on his later stuff with Grinderman etc.
