Ken McGrath has been appointed selector to the Waterford senior hurling team following the departure of selector Nicky Cashin.
Manager Michael Ryan confirmed to WLRfm Sport that the former All Star will join the backroom team.
McGrath will be in situ for his new role for this weekend’s Allianz Hurling League Division 1A match with Galway at Pearse Stadium.
Ryan added that Cashin’s departure from the Déise setup was due to personal reasons, and that Cashin departs on good terms with the team and management.
McGrath played centre-back for Waterford from 1996 until 2011, winning four Munster SHC titles, and one National Hurling League crown during that time. He was also a three-time All Star during that period.
The Mount Sion clubman also won six Waterford club titles and one Munster club title.
Is that a sop to the players? Cashin was alledgedly unhappy that Kelly was allowed return to the panel. Does ken have anything to bring to the role?
Doubt it. Don’t see the point in having a sop to the players, if Ryan is out of his depth then he should be jettisoned. I don’t think this is as much a case of players not willing to play or put in the required effort for Ryan and has far more to do with the shortcoming of the management team

According to a few lads on the farmyard the county board do seem to be searching for a replacement. What has gone wrong? Ryan seemed to have a decent pedigree with DLS. Looks completely out of his depth at county level.
In fairness he wouldn’t be the first lad to have done well at club level but be completely out of his depth at I/C level. Just look at the Sparrow. Considering he was the unanimious choice of the clubs and there were no dissenting voices when he was appointed shows that he had the backing of the club delegates but they have been an unmitigated disaster since he took over. While some will talk about player power if he does get the road it is very hard to blame the players if a manager/management team is hopelessly out of their depth. Granted injuries haven’t helped but v Clare in the WC and in their three league games thus far they have been nothing short of a rabble and this is down to the management

I suppose it’s a huge step from club to county now. Will Waterford bite the bullet before relegation becomes inevitable? Or write off the league and bring someone in for the championship? Better to act now surely?

He was out of his depth at DLS too but they sidelined him and worked around him rather than endure a public falling out.
